Clecentine and I walked side by side down the stairs, our heels clicking in sync.

I must admit she did look like a snack in that beige dress of hers and a simple chain with a diamond pendant resting between her collarbones. She carried a cream-coloured clutch with her in one hand while the other lightly brushed my fingers making my heart beat slightly faster.

She however didn't seem to be affected in the slightest with a tiny physical contact with me.

When we reached the foot of the stairs we were greeted heartily by Sirena's family members. They refrained from hugging Clecentine and instead just took to shaking her hand.

I could tell the reason for this was the uncomfortable glare she had on her face every time someone extended their hands to hug her. She simply stood there, holding her clutch.

My eyes blinked twice in surprise when she grabbed hold of my hand out of the blue and began leading me to where the others were going.

''Whoa!" I exclaimed when I came face to face with a beautifully adorned dining room. A long table with a light blue and white tablecloth, white chairs and violet flowers hanging from the chandelier. It looked like a perfect fantasy for a bride.

''Come, have a seat.''

Following Mrs Sanderson's hand Clecentine and I seated ourselves next to each other, the mouth-watering scent of food wafting our way.

Wine, champagne, whiskey and drinks of all kinds were poured around in glasses before appetizers were served. Clecentine, just like any other day opted for whiskey while I quietly sipped the mocktail, its flavour bursting in my taste buds.

''Rosie dear.'' My eyes turned to Sirena's mother who was sipping on her wine, ''How did the two of you meet?''

Well fuck.

Clecentine gave me a side look. My hands were clutching my black satin dress, shaking slightly. Her eyes fell on my shaky hands before she touched them, patting them once before withdrawing them and placing them in her lap.

I needed her to hold my hands. I wish she held them a little longer. Her touching my hands made me feel less nervous and calm down on the inside.

''We have mutual friends. They planned a date for us on Valentine's Day. We have been on dates since then. But we're not official yet.'' The lie rolled off her tongue so easily.

Her confident yet casual expression and tone made everyone fall for her lie.

''Well, that's lovely. I can't believe you didn't tell us Rose. I can't wait until you become official.'' Maria gushed, sharing a hyper-excited look with her cousin seated next to her.

Yeah sure. I would definitely tell others about my deal with the American mafia boss to be her escort for a year.

Note the sarcasm.
