Ophelia
When Ethan and I reached the dining room, the sitting situation was so awkward that it made me want to bang my head.
"Enjoy the party," Ethan whispered to me sarcastically and sat opposite to Anastasia.
Anastasia and James were sitting at two completely opposite ends of the table. Anastasia was sitting in the south left corner, and James was sitting on the north right corner of the table. There was an empty chair between Ethan and James. There were two empty chairs on the right of Anastasia. I had no idea where to sit that would make it less awkward.
Fuck!
"James, why don't you shift here?" I said, pointing to the seat next to Ethan.
He nodded and moved as I sat next to Anastasia, finally making it a little normal.
I cleared my throat and said, "Let's start with the starters?"
Everyone nodded, and I began serving.
"Wow, looks like tonight we are eating all my favorites," Ethan said as he saw the food on the table.
"It's your birthday, after all, isn't it?" I said, and he took a bite.
"Not all women understand their men so well. You are really lucky to have Ophelia as your wife, son," James said as Ethan started coughing, and I choked on my spit.
The words 'husband', 'wife', and 'marriage' are like triggers for both of us.
We are barely friends at the moment, and these words literally push us back to the night in Vegas.
I clenched my hand under the table and took a deep breath to control my emotions.
When Ethan recovered, he gave James a small smile and started eating.
"It is also very important that you be a good husband to her, Ethan," Anastasia said, making me bit my lip.
I looked at Ethan through my lashes, and I knew that we both knew that they weren't talking about us at all.
Guess I was wrong, after all. They really seem to be unable to stand each other at all. Maybe they weren't meant for each other.
"Ophelia, why don't you serve the main course?" Ethan told me trying to lightened the mood.
I quickly nodded and served some risotto to Anastasia and me before, I passed it to Ethan.
"Dad, give me your plate," Ethan said and took some risotto to give him.
"No, it has mushrooms," I said and stopped him and passed the spaghetti bowl to James, "This is for you."
Ethan and James looked at me with surprise.
"Oh. Thanks, Ophelia. That's so good of you to remember," James smiled and took the spaghetti.
I gave him a nervous smile and looked at Ethan who looked at me with confusion.
He obviously is thinking how did I find out.
I just shook my head at him slightly indicating I will tell him later.
We started eating and my eyes fell on James who froze as soon as he took the first bite of the spaghetti.
I looked at him with a little shock.
Did he figure it out that Anastasia made it?
I saw him gulp it down and have a sip of water.
"This spaghetti is tasteless. Looks like the cook forgot to add salt. Ophelia, can you please get me some salt?" he asked me.
