Ophelia
Ten minutes later, the living room was spotless. All the photos were picked up and kept away and the house finally looked normal.
The people in the house? Not so much.
James was sitting on the stairs with his head resting on his hand and eyes closed while Anastasia was sitting on the couch lost in her thoughts.
I walked to Ethan, who was standing silently and looking outside the glass window. I kept my hand on his shoulder to gain his attention. He looked at me with a straight face and gulped.
"You're okay?" I whispered.
He shrugged.
"It will be alright," I told him.
He looked at him mother and then, at his dad and then back at me.
"Will it? Neither does Dad trust Mama nor does Mama trust Dad," he told me.
"Do you think your dad... I mean let's listen to what Rose has to say, okay? I am sure things will get better after that," I told him, reassuringly.
"I don't think so. Even if Rose comes and says that there is nothing between them, you think mom will believe it just like that? What about the pictures she has? Still, for a second, let's assume she does. Then, what? Will dad forgive her? Will mom forgive dad for not being there for her?" he asked me and I bit my lip not knowing what to say.
"We are still where we were, Ophelia. Nothing's changed," he rolled his eyes and looked away.
I was about to reply to him but, James got up from the stairs and said, "Ophelia, I have to take my medicines. I need to eat something. Is there anything in the house?"
"Carla has taken a leave today. But, I can make you some tea," I offered.
"That'll work," he said and we started walking towards the kitchen.
"What do you want?" I asked Ethan and he shook his head.
"You haven't had anything since morning. At least drink something," I said again.
He shrugged and walked towards me.
I stopped him and pointed towards Anastasia because I am scared that she will probably murder me if I ask her anything right now.
Ethan rolled his eyes and said, "Mama, do you-"
"No," she said leaving no room for argument.
Ethan shrugged at me and we walked to the kitchen. Ethan opened the fridge and got out a can of juice. I switched on the stove and started making tea.
After a few minutes, I poured the tea in two mugs and handed one to James. We were sipping on our drinks, when we heard the door click and heels clicking against the tiled floor.
Someone said in a soft voice, "James?"
I frowned and looked at Ethan who clenched his jaw.
"It's Rose," James said and got up from his seat quickly.
"Eager, are we?" Ethan taunted.
"Thank you. It is very nice to know how much you trust your father," James glared at him.
"James? You're there?" Rose called out again.
James opened his mouth to yell a reply to Rose but, was cut off by Ethan, "Don't forget you too accused Mama. She at least had something solid. You didn't even think twice before doing it."
"Ethan," I whispered and warned him.
Ethan rolled his eyes as we got up.
James opened his mouth to reply, but was cut off by Rose speaking in a haughty tone, "What the hell are you doing here?"
