Ophelia
I woke up with the sound of the door slamming shut.
I rubbed my eyes and looked around as I heard footsteps.
It took me a moment to realise where I was, and my eyes instantly widened, and I sat up in a jerk as it sank in.
I quickly got up from the floor and took a few quick steps towards the couch to grab my bag and hide somewhere before I could find a chance to leave stealthily.
But, to my misfortune, just when I turned around, Ethan walked into the living room. He looked up from his phone, and his eyes widened in surprise when they met mine.
Did the wedding get over already? How long did I sleep for?
He stared at me for a few minutes as I continued staring at him.
My feet were rooted to the spot as my heart and mind fought the battle. I wanted to run to him, hug him, tell him that I had missed him, but my head wouldn't allow me.
No, Ophelia. What are you thinking? Are you crazy? You are having all these thoughts just by looking at this picture. Don't forget, it could have been an old one. Didn't you see how happy he was at the church? He has moved on.
But we can be friends, right?
Are you serious? Friends? And what will you tell him when he questions you about why you had lied to him eight months ago? No, Ophelia.
"I..I came to drop this. I don't think I need it anymore. I would have asked you to..to meet me, but didn't find the reason to," I told him without looking at his eyes.
He didn't say anything and just stared at me silently.
"Ummm...I should get going," I said and walked past him.
"I don't get why people often do this?" he said, finally making me stop in my tracks.
I frowned and waited for him to continue.
"People always leave us at the point where we are totally addicted to them," he said, making me turn around.
"What...what do you mean?" I asked him.
"Huh? Oh no, I am not talking to you. I am just thinking about something I recently heard," he said without turning towards me and just looking sideways.
I gulped, "Of course."
I turned around to leave once again.
He saw me after eight months, and he is thinking about.......maybe he really has moved on.
"But, since you are here, why don't you answer my question then?" he spoke again.
"What question?" I asked without turning around.
"Why do people leave when you suddenly, just out of the blue?" he repeated.
"Maybe because they know that it is for the best," I told him, staring at the floor distantly.
"Do you know what's not the best?" he said.
Why isn't he angry to see me here? Maybe I don't affect him like that anymore.
"What?" I asked him nonetheless, gulping down my sadness.
"Unexpected bond with unexpected people and then, unexpected goodbye," he said, making me gasp.
"Why do you think people would do that then?" he asked again, pulling me out of my shock.
I paused for a second as I thought of what to say to him.
