(Later that night)
You and Perrito left the wagon as you eyed Puss climbing up the water wheel of the pie factory. "I see him!" you whispered. Perrito looked around, "How are we gonna sneak in?" he asked. You looked at the guards then smirked at the pup. "Ooh, you have a plan?" he asked. You nodded.
You walked to the gate as a guard looked to your side. "Hey, what are you doin'?" he barked. You whipped your head around as you stared at him. "I can't get a moment of peace without you guards yelling at me! I work here, imbécil!" you snapped back. He looked shocked as you got closer. "I might as well leave now since I can't work without peace. You can go tell señor Horner that I'm not fixing your problems!" you snarled. He looked shaken as he nodded his head vigorously. "No, ma'am! You may come in, please!" he stuttered.
You smirked as you saw Perrito make his way up to the water wheel and jump on it. You huffed. "Thank you!" you sighed as you went past the man. The giant wooden gates opened as you saw the dog talking with Puss. you saw Puss crawl into a pipe as Perrito looked down at you from the wall. You opened your hands in a motion for him to jump. He did without second thought.
You grabbed the small dog as you nuzzled him close. "So what did Puss say?" you asked. He smiled. "He told me to go home. But he seems to want something in there." Perrito pointed. You craned your neck to the tall castle-looking factory. You hummed in response. You found a nearby wagon as you walked around. "Here you are!" you cooed to the dog. He smiled happily. "I couldn't ask for better friends like you and Puss!" he yipped. (ACK MY HEART!!!)
You sat down on the wagon seat, waiting. "Perro?" you asked. He turned his head to you. "What?" he asked. You looked at the cobblestone road. "Di-did you really mean what you said back there...about being friends?" you asked, daring to meet his eyes. "Of course! Why would I lie to you? You're amazing!" he answered. Your eyes widened in shock as you felt tears building up. "I-I've never had a friend before....B-but I'm glad you're my first one, Perrito." you said, hoarsely.
Perrito sat on your lap as he looked at you. "You seem sad. You wanna talk about it?" he asked. You stared at the stary sky. "My parents died when I was little, and I was shoved into a orphanage as soon as I was born." you answered. Perrito's brow curved upward sympathetically. "I wasn't able to make friends there, they always made fun of me." you added.
He let out a 'oh' as he turned over to his back. Your hand wormed to his belly as you rubbed it. Drool slathered his mouth happily. "When I was finally able to get out of that hell-hole. I took on bounty hunting. I got some money out of it, but not much. I basically went out of business." you answered. He blinked. "I think your too nice to do bounty hunting." he added, standing up from your legs.
"You're very optimistic, Perrito. Always looking for the good in everyone. Even when there isn't." you mumbled the last part. He smiled, then looked down. "Hey, look a sandwich!" he said. You heard the sound of yelling and glass shattering as you looked up from the wagon. Next thing you knew, it was raining cats. Puss and a all-too familiar cat burst through the canopy of the wagon as Perrito jumped up.
"Hey, Puss! I found a sandwich in here. I think it's tuna fish." he said. Puss stood up and slapped the sandwich onto your lap. "Drive, Perro!" he yelled. The mutt immediately sat down and whipped the reins. "Okeydoke." he answered. The horse took off as the puzzle-pieces snapped in my mind. "Kitty Softpaws?" I asked. You did a job with her once, the only reason you got half the rewards.
She was to preoccupied fighting with Puss over a map. A flaming arrow whizzed pass you head as you craned your neck behind. Men on horses were shooting at the wagon. Kitty blocked an arrow with a sack of gold. "Oh, cool! Another member of the team!" Perrito said, turning his back to the road. "We are not a team!" Puss and Kitty hissed simultaneously. "Eyes on the road!" Puss yelled, pushing Perrito back into place. "Who is this guy?" Kitty asked. Perrito's eyes lit up as he pushed against Puss. "I'm Puss's best friend!" Perrito yipped.
"No, he isn't!" he snarled, pushing off the dog. Perrito's chest huffed proudly. "And his therapy dog!" he added, looking at Kitty. "Definitely not!" Puss hissed, snapping the mutt's head back to the road. Kitty rolled her eyes. "Finally, you need therapy!" Kitty said. You nodded in agreement.
The wagon took a sharp right as you almost slid off the wagon. Flaming arrows hissing through the air. "Give me the map. Trust me." Puss said. Kitty raised her eyebrow, "Trust you? Like I did in Santa Coloma?" Kitty seethed. "Really? Santa Coloma?" Puss asked. "Sí, Santa Coloma!" she hissed, her face inching closer to Puss's. A arrow exploded behind them as they were clearly unfazed by this. "Calm down!" you yelled. A arrow clunked against the wagon as they still fought over the stupid map.
"Mine!" Puss said.
"Mine!" Kitty hissed.
"Mine!" Puss snapped.
"Mine!" Kitty shrieked.
Their teeth gleamed in the firelight as they hissed and shrieked at each other. You slammed your fist on the wagon, "Shut up!" you yelled. An arrow whizzed right passed the map and Perrito, slightly catching both of them on fire. Kitty and Puss blew on the small flame pathetically quick. You licked your fingers as you extinguished the flame on Perrito's head. He smiled at you as Puss and Kitty stared daggers at the men. Puss's gaze lowered to the bags of gold. He kicked them onto the road as dozens of people crowded, blocking the men from going further. "Good people! Accept this golden gift from Puss in Boots!" he answered, as you and Kitty rolled your eyes. Cheers echoed through the road as you smiled. All of a sudden, a whistle ripped through your ears. Goosebumps traveled up your body as you slowly started hyperventilating. 'Breath, breath, you're fine' your mind echoed.
"Y/N." a familiar voice purred.
Your heart was beating way to quickly as you put you head on your knees. "You're not here, you're not here." you answered reassuringly. "Oh, but I'm here, querido, I'm very much here!" he whispered. Your neck popped as your head looked behind you. Your eyes widened as you saw the dreaded wolf. He had two coins over his eyes and was pointing two fingers. "Speed up! Go, go, go!" Puss's voice echoed through your mind. Perrito whipped the reins as he let out a yelp. You felt lightheaded as you calmed down.
"Mark my words, mi vida, you will see me again~."
A blush rushed up your face, as the wagon left the small town. You rested your head on the board as you closed your eyes.
(Cool yet eerie fact: Coins layed on the corpse's eyes is a form of respect for the dead. The practice began in when people believed the dead needed coins to pay, to cross the river Stynx.)
