(this is set after s3 and before s4, you are Steve's younger sister)
It was pitch black. The only outdoor light source coming from y/n's window was the blue hue from the pool. Y/n was reading her latest edition of Wonder Woman on her bed, blankets surrounding her.
-the doorbell rings-
"STEVE!" y/n shouts, no reply.
"STEVE!!" she repeats, no answer.
"You've got to be kidding me" she says to herself. Y/n runs down the stairs at the sound of the bell ringing again.
"This better be goo-" She opens the door to max.
"Max?, what are you doing here?"
"H-hi uhm are your parents here?" She says playing with the sleeves of her jacket.
"No it's just me and Steve, why?"
"Do you mind if I stay the night..?"
"Uh yeah sure come on in" Y/n signals for max to come in, max follows.
-in y/n's room-
Max places her backpack down next to y/n's comic bookshelf , her skateboard propped against it.
"Your room is cool" max points out.
"Thanks I decorated it myself my favourite part is my comic shelf" y/n's says proudly pointing to her prized possessions.
"No way you like Wonder Woman?" max excitingly says, walking towards the shelf to get a closer look.
"Yeah it's the only comic series I read really" y/n replies.
"What's so special about this one?" Max points out to the comic on display on the top shelf.
"Oh that was the comic that got me into Wonder Woman, Dustin gave it to me for Christmas along with some x-men comics but this one was always my favourite" she says with pride.
"Cool I'm not sure if I have read that one before, is it good?" Max asks.
"Yeah it's the best do you want to read it?" She asks, max nods in agreement.
"But under one condition." Y/n says looking at max who looks concerned.
"What?" Max questions.
"Why are you here, I mean I love the company but we don't really hang out is.. everything okay..?" Y/n asks trying not be rude or to hurt Max's feelings in the process.
"Oh um I-"
Max is interrupted by a knock on y/n's bedroom door.
"Y/N" Steve yells from the other side of the door.
"COME IN!" The younger replies.
Steve opens the door confused by Max's presence -max never comes here, why is she here- he thinks to himself.
"Hey" max says awkwardly.
"I was wondering if you wanted to get pizza since dad isn't answering,I have no clue when he's coming back and I'm way too lazy to cook again tonight, oh and max do you want anything?"
"Pepperoni please" max replies with a faint smile
"Same for me too!" y/n answers back.
"Okay great I'm driving there so you'll be home alone okay, and remember don-"
"Don't answer the door to anyone you don't know while your not here, yes I know" y/n interrupts.
"I shouldn't be too long okay see you later" Steve says closing the door behind him.
"Anyway where were we? Oh yes I was asking about your unexpected visit." Y/n sits down next to max on the bed and turns to her waiting for a response. Max looks down playing with the sleeves on her jacket again while thinking what to say.
"It's..my mom" max says.
"What about her is she okay?" Y/n responds with a worried tone.
"Well kinda. Ever since... Billy.. and my step dad moving out she's been.. drinking again." Y/n gives her a soft smile but max is still looking down avoiding eye contact.
"We moved to this shitty caravan park in east Hawkins and it's just all kinda been down hill from there. She's working two jobs, sleeping between shifts and drinking excessively . She comes home and we get into fights.. bad fights. I feel like she has to constantly rely on me to look after her and clean up after her but it's all becoming too much." Max says, still looking away tears forming in her eyes.
"I didn't want to go to Lucas because we're still not on good terms and I'm not really close with anyone since el moved away and Dustin is always busy with suzie, I.. just didn't know who to turn too really, sorry if it was unexpected." She says apologetically tears slowly streaming down her face. Y/n scoots closer to max and and puts her hand on Max's now shaky hand, max turns to look at her, tears cascading from her eyes.
"Hey it's okay, your welcome here anytime and if you ever need to talk I'm always here okay, don't be afraid to come to me I will always be here to listen to you." The sympathetic girl says. Max then looks back down again playing with her jacket, nail marks up and down the bottom of the sleeves from scratching it.
"I promise" y/n reinsures. She then goes in for a hug with max. Although she didn't know her well, max made her feel comfortable. Max sinks her head into the girls shoulder and let's out her last tears.
The hug is broken up by the sound of Steve coming home. Max quickly wipes her tears away and y/n grabs maxes hand, making her follow her down the stairs.
They both thank Steve for the pizza and run back upstairs with it talking about high school between eating.
Y/n turned the radio on after eating dancing around her room to 'Angel by Madonna' max following her with her eyes while still sitting on the bed laughing along.
"Max come onn" the dancing girl wines
"Fine but I'm not singing" max says walking over.
After dancing around y/n's room they both laid exhausted on her bed giggling to each other
"Hey I'm gonna go change into pjs, where's your bathroom?" Max asks
"Just down the hall to the left" she explains.
By the time max had returned both girls were in their pjs and both got into bed.
Y/n grabbed the Wonder Woman comic from earlier and snuggled up to max and began to read. After they finished reading y/n placed the comic on her nightstand and turned off her bedside lamp.
"Goodnight max" y/n says yawning
"Goodnight y/n" max replies
-silence-
"Y/n" max says softly
"Yeah?" She replies
"Thank you" max says.
"Anytime max" y/n replies turning over to face her.
