"BIHARIII," Trilochan Roy Chaudhary roared. His voice bombed throughout Roy Chaudhary haveli, making Anirudh, Bondita, and Bhagirathi flinch. The trio looked at him, shocked.
"Kaka..." Anirudh whispered, but soon he was interrupted by his kaka.
"Himmat kaise huyi tumhari Anirudh! Humare mandir jaise ghar mein ek kalankini ko lane ki!" Trilochan exclaimed in disgust.
("How dare you, Anirudh! Bringing a blemished woman into our pure home!")
"Kaka, yeh aap kya-"
("Uncle, what are you-")
"BIHARI!! Puri haveli mein Gangajal chidko, iss pagal ki toh buddhi bhrast ho gayi hai! Pata nahi apne fitoor mein kya kya karta rehta hai! Lekin humari baat bhi kaan khol kar sun lo Anirudh, tumhara yeh fitoor yaha nahi chalne wala! Tumhe jo bhi karna hai woh is ghar ke bahar karo. Aur yeh kalankini ko bhi humare ghar se bahar nikalo abhi!" Trilochan said furiously. How could Anirudh bring someone like her into his pure mansion? Anirudh made his house impure.
("BIHARI!! Sprinkle Gangajal throughout the mansion; this fool has lost his mind! I don't know what he keeps doing in his madness! But listen carefully, Anirudh, your madness won't work here! Whatever you want to do, do it outside this house. And get this blemished woman out of our house now!")
Meanwhile, Bihari came with Gangajal and handed it to Trilochan. He took the holy water in his palm and started sprinkling aggressively around him. Anirudh was about to reply to his kaka, but suddenly, Binoy Roy Chaudhary held Bhagirathi's wrist, who was there for a while now, and dragged her downstairs.
"Baba!"
"Binoy!"
Anirudh and Trilochan yelled simultaneously and followed him downstairs. Binoy left Bhagirathi's hand with so much force that, with the impact, she landed on the floor. The chaos was so big that even the Das family came there.
Binoy threw a bundle of notes on her face. "Le, yahi chahiye na! Ab chali jao iss ghar se. Tum jaisi bazaru aurat ko bas yahi chahiye hota hai!" he spat angrily.
("Take this, isn't this what you want? Now leave this house. A woman like you only wants money!")
"Bas kijiye baba, yeh mehman hai humari, kya yahi tarika hai Roy Chaudharion ki mehman-nawazi ka?" Anirudh said calmly, though his patience was breaking.
("Enough, father, she is our guest. Is this how the Roy Chaudharis treat their guests?")
"Mehman nahi, yeh humari ANIRUDH!" Binoy yelled at Anirudh. He again threw a bundle at Bhagirathi. "Itni hi aukaat hai iss nachne wali ki!"
("She is not our guest, Anirudh! This is her worth!")
Bhagirathi, who was still on the floor due to shock, felt extremely humiliated. Though her work is not respectable, she doesn't get money for free; she sells her body, her self-respect, her dignity. Every single night, her dignity is taken away from her. No woman chooses to be there; it's their compulsion, as society will not accept them. They have no choice but to be there.
Bondita immediately helped her to stand properly.
"Bazaru aurat hai yeh, par inhe bazaru banane wale hain aap jaise log, Baba," Anirudh stated.
("She is a market woman, but those who make her a market woman are people like you, Father.")
"ANIRUDH!" Binoy shouted, offended.
"Mere kadve shabdon ko maaf kijiye ga, Baba. Par agar yeh do paiso mein bikne wale log hain, toh inhe do paiso mein kharidne wale hain aap jaise log, Baba. Gharon mein mehfil ko sajane, inhe ghar bulane wale hain aap jaise log, aur jashn khatam hone par inhe kichad keh kar ghar ki dehleez par fekne wale hain aap jaise log, BABA! Samman pe toh har aurat ka barabar se haaq hota hai na, Baba?"
("Forgive my harsh words, Father. But if they are people who sell themselves for a few coins, then those who buy them for a few coins are people like you, Father. Those who invite them to adorn their homes, those who call them to their homes, and those who throw them out after the celebration, calling them dirt, are people like you, FATHER! Doesn't every woman have an equal right to respect, Father?")
"Anirudh beta, ghar ki aurton ki tulna bazaru aurton se nahi karte," this time it was Rajat, Bondita's father.
("Anirudh, son, you don't compare household women with such women.")
Anirudh took a deep breath to calm himself. He didn't want to say something in anger.
"Hum sab jante hai Uncle, koi bhi aurat apni marzi se bazaar nahi chunti! Hum ye kyu nahi soch pate ki ye bhi kisi ki behen hogi, kisi ki beti hogi!"
("We all know, Uncle, no woman chooses the that willingly! Why can't we think that she too could be someone's sister, someone's daughter!")
"Waah! Anirudh Waah!" Binoy clapped his hand.
"Humne sapne mein bhi nahi socha tha ki tum ek bazaru aurat ke liye apne baba se jagdonge!"
("I never imagined that you would fight with your father for a market woman!")
"Anirudh, jo hua so hua. Ab bhejo is aurat ko yaha se aur yeh mamla yahi khatam karo," Trilochan tried to calm the dreadful atmosphere.
("Anirudh, what happened, happened. Now send this woman away and end this matter here.")
"Nahi, Kaka! Mere jeete ji kisi aurat ka apmaan nahi hoga. Yahi vachan liya tha na, yahi karan tha na mera London se Hindustan vapas aane ka! Toh yeh yahi rahegi," Anirudh said.
("No, Uncle! As long as I'm alive, no woman will be insulted. This is the promise I took, right? This was the reason I came back to India from London! So she will stay here.")
"Nahi, bilkul nahi. Hum yeh nahi hone denge!" Trilochan stated.
("No, absolutely not. We won't let this happen!")
"Kaka-" Bondita interrupted Anirudh.
"Barrister Babu, Kaka. Pari didi humare ghar pe reh sakti hai. Hai na, Baba?" Bondita said.
("Barrister Babu, Uncle. Pari didi can stay at our house. Right, Father?")
"Pari didi?" Everyone asked her, confused.
"Haan! Pari didi. Bhagirathi didi bilkul Pari ki tarah hai!" said Bondita innocently. Anirudh smiled at her, while Binoy scoffed at her words and others looked at her adorably.
("Yes! Pari didi. Bhagirathi didi is just like a fairy!")
"Hai na, Baba? Pari didi humare sath reh sakti hai na?" Bondita asked her father again.
("Right, Father? Pari didi can stay with us, right?")
"NAHI!!" Rajat said in a firm tone.
("NO!!")
Bondita and Parth looked at their father, surprised. He was not someone who would discriminate. The way he loves and adores Bondita, anyone can tell that he respects women.
"Par kyu, Baba?" she questioned.
("But why, Father?")
"Maine kaha nahi!" This time his tone was more firm and cold.
("I said no!")
"Baba, please..." Bondita pleaded.
"Na matlab na, Bondita. Aur tumhe iski itni hi fikar hai toh tumhe bhi ghar aane ki koi zarurat nahi!" he said strictly, making Bondita's world shatter.
("No means no, Bondita. And if you care so much about her, then you also don't need to come home!")
