Bondita stood frozen, her father’s harsh words echoing in her mind. Tears welled up in her eyes, but she blinked them away, determined to stand her ground.
“Baba, aap aise kaise keh sakte hain?” she asked, her voice trembling with hurt.
(Father, how can you say this?)
“Maine kaha na, is vishay pe koi charcha nahi chahiye. Aur agar tumhe humare virudh jana hai, toh tum bhi iske sath ja sakti ho,” Rajat replied sternly.
(I said there is no room for discussion on this matter. If you want to go against us, you can go with her too.)
Bondita managed a bitter smile. “Baba, ab kyun rok rahe hain mujhe? Kahi aisa toh nahi ki mardon ki tarah aap bhi...”
(Father, why are you stopping me now? Is it that you, like the others...)
Before she could finish, Rajat yelled, “BONDITA!” He raised his hand, and Bondita shut her eyes tightly, bracing for the impact. But before he could strike, Anirudh intervened, holding Rajat’s hand.
“Apka haath pakadne ke liye mafi chahta hoon, Uncle. Lekin aap Bondita pe haath nahi utha sakte,” Anirudh said firmly.
(I apologize for holding your hand, Uncle, but you cannot raise your hand against Bondita.)
Trilochan stepped forward, attempting to calm the situation. "Rajat ye bachche aksar nanad-nandiyon ke saath kuch bhi bol dete hain, lekin iska matlab yeh nahi ki humein itni kathorata se kaam lena chahiye.”
(Rajat, Children often say things they don’t mean to their relatives, but that doesn’t mean we should act with such harshness.)
Rajat looked at Trilochan with a mixture of confusion and anger. “Trilochan babu, yeh baatein achhi nahi lagti.”
(Mr. Trilochan, these things are serious.)
"Sari galti is kalankini ki hai, jab se humare ghar mein pav rakha tab bas humare bache humse lad rahe hai." Trilochan said pointing at Bhagirathi.
(It is all the fault of this Kalankini, ever since she set foot in our house our children have been fighting with us.)
Binoy, unable to remain silent, interjected, “Aur yeh bazaru aurat yahan nahi reh sakti! Humare ghar ki izzat ka sawaal hai!”
(And this woman cannot stay here! It’s a matter of our family’s honor!)
Trilochan's face turned red with anger. "Bas! Bahut ho gaya. Anirudh, tum apni zid ko yahi khatam karo. Agar yeh aurat yaha rahi, toh main yeh ghar chhod kar chala jaunga."
(Enough! This is too much. Anirudh, end your stubbornness here. If this woman stays here, I will leave this house.)
"Kaka ap..." Anirudh tried to speak Just then, Bhagirathi, who had been silent all this while, spoke up. Her voice was weak but firm. "Nahi, Anirudh Babu. Main yaha se chali jaungi. Mujhe yaha rehkar aap sabko aur pareshaan nahi karna."
(No, Anirudh Babu. I will leave. I don't want to cause more trouble for everyone by staying here.)
Anirudh’s determination to stand by Bhagirathi didn't waver, even as his uncle Trilochan's resolve remained unyielding. The tension in the room was palpable, each word adding weight to the already heavy atmosphere.
"Kaka, agar aap yaha nahi dekhna chahte Bhagirathi ko, toh humari purani haveli ka kya hua?" Anirudh asked calmly, his voice firm.
(Uncle, if you don't want to see Bhagirathi here, what about our old farmhouse?)
Trilochan’s face remained stern, but he didn’t object. Sensing an opportunity, Anirudh continued, "Waha par Bhagirathi ko rakh sakte hai. Aur main aur Bondita unke saath wahin rahenge."
(We can keep Bhagirathi didi there. And Bondita and I will stay there with her.)
"Barrister babu," Bondita whispered, her eyes filled with determination. "Main bhi Pari didi ke saath rahungi. Baba jo bhi kahe, par main apni manzil pe dagmagane nahi dungi."
( I will also stay with Pari didi. No matter what Father says, I won't let my resolve waver.)
Rajat's expression softened for a moment, seeing his daughter's resolve, but he remained silent.
Trilochan finally spoke, his voice heavy with resignation, "Agar yahi karna hai tumlogo toh karo, par yaad rahe is ghar ki izzat par anch nahi aani chahiye."
(If this is what you want to do, then do it, but remember, the honor of this house should not be tarnished.)
Anirudh nodded, his eyes filled with determination. "Hum sabka dhyan rakhenge, Kaka."
(We will take care of everything, Uncle.)
Without further ado, Anirudh, Bondita, and Bhagirathi packed a few essentials and prepared to leave for the old farmhouse. Bhagirathi was hesitant, but Bondita held her hand reassuringly.
"Hum sab theek kar denge, didi. Aap bharosa rakhiye," Bondita said, her voice filled with conviction.
(We will make everything right, didi. trust us.)
The journey to the farmhouse was quiet. Each of them was lost in their thoughts. The farmhouse was located on the outskirts of the village, surrounded by lush green fields and a serene environment. It was a place filled with memories of simpler times, far removed from the chaos of the main haveli.
As they reached the farmhouse, Bondita turned to Anirudh. "Barrister Babu, yeh jagah kitni sukoon bhari hai. Yaha hum sab milkar nayi shuruaat kar sakte hai."
(Barrister Babu, this place is so peaceful. Here, we can all start afresh.)
Anirudh smiled at her, grateful for her unwavering support. "Haan, Bondita. Yahi hamari nayi shuruaat hogi. Bhagirathi ke saath milkar hum ek nayi zindagi banayenge."
(Yes, Bondita. This will be our new beginning. Together with Bhagirathi, we will build a new life.)
Bhagirathi, who had been silent, finally spoke up, her voice filled with emotion. "Aap dono ka shukriya. Aapne jo sahara diya hai, uske liye main zindagi bhar aabhaari rahungi."
(Thank you both. I will be forever grateful for the support you have given me.)
They settled into the farmhouse, cleaning and organizing it to make it livable. Bondita’s lively chatter filled the rooms, bringing a sense of normalcy to their new home.
