After telling the kids the big news about us dating, our lives all started to mesh with each other.
Some mornings Steve would drive by the school after taking Ainsley to her private school and bringing Travis to VPK. He'd set their car seats up in my car and I'd drive them home.
Kat was asking so many questions. She knew something was up. I mean it was pretty obvious.
The kids and I were entirely absorbed with each other. When Steve did come to get the kids we did nothing but giggle with each other and he lingered unnecessarily long.
The bringing me lunch and breakfast was a clear giveaway too. If Steve couldn't come to me in a classroom or if I couldn't meet him at the front desk, he'd leave it with Linda, our front desk lady.
And gossip traveled fast at work. Especially when it was related to staff dating parents of the school.
"Soooooo."
I look at Kat who waltzed over with a basketball in hand. It's the end of the day. Steve will be here soon to get the kids and I'll follow shortly to his house like I've been doing for the past few weeks.
"So what?"
She looks at me pointedly.
"You and Steve that's what," she says putting a hand on her hip.
"Oh that," I say with a smirk. "Well what are you asking?"
"You totally let him tap that, pregnant and all."
"Oh my gosh Kat!" I slap her arm. "No. No I did not. We are just dating."
"No tapping?"
"No! You little perv. Just dating and make out sessions and accidentally falling asleep at his place every weekend."
"I need all the details. Omg! What did the kids say? How did you guys tell them?"
"They kinda caught us kissing," I say sheepishly.
Her eyes widen. "Really?"
"Yeah it was so awkward for me, but it went pretty well. I think Travis was very alarmed by it, but more so because I'm his teacher and here his dad was kissing me. They said they're really happy and want me to be their mommy. Which is so cute but..."
"Nerve wracking?"
"Yes! Like how could I replace their mom? The more I spend time with them though, the more it feels natural. Especially with how Steve is so eager to be part of my baby's life. It's easy to just fall into the role."
"You're not replacing their mom, though. She's gone and those kids probably do need a mother figure. Not to mention Steve. Like we're forgetting the STEVE!"
I know Steve was amazing. The best overall package. Attentive and loving, he cared so much about me and the baby, but still gave his all to his kids. He's funny and cute and sometimes a little quirky.
"You're right. Someone was gonna do it if I didn't come around, so why not me?"
"And you really care for them. You're the perfect match."
I give her a hug, then we get back to finishing up the day.
Steve came a little earlier than usual to pick up the kids.
I'm pretty sure it's because he knew today I got off at 5 instead of 6 and he wanted to see me before I went home.
I had been going to his house so often that I felt I needed to stay home for a little bit. We hadn't gotten to the point of me leaving any clothes there yet. But I did have a pink toothbrush set beside his.
