I Push Myself to the Edge

I was finally home with a feeling of emptiness, the moon was the only thing that illuminated my house through the windows. The guards trashed my whole house but I could tell that nothing was stolen, in this room at least. I felt the tears weld in my eyes as I looked at all my plants broken and dead on the ground. The one couch I had was ripped up and moved from where it was originally. My hand moved shakily as it grazed the torn up couch. I felt a chill both from emptiness and the cold air from outside. With a snap of my fingers I lit the fireplace and just looked at the fire with guilt flowing through me. It was all my fault Swiss was back there.

I had moved to my room to see all the drawers unhinged and on top of my bed. There were pieces of parchment and books thrown all around the room and thankfully all the books were intact, however some were missing.

I blinked away the water that was fogging my vision and continued to look around my trashed room. I could easily clean this all up. Especially now since I had the energy to do so now but it was just the action of it all, I feel so violated. I fell to my knees holding a ripped up parchment that had a recipe for a healing potion that I was wanting to try out.

I quickly shot up when I remembered my potion room. I ran out and prayed to whoever was listening that nothing was stolen. To my shock and horror all of my ingredients were gone. All the years of ingredients that I have had were gone. I spent so long getting them wether it was scavenging for them, saving up for some by finding lose change or just straight up taking them from people. I had already felt bad for taking them from people but now that I can't even use the ingredients that I had taken from them.

I got so frustrated that I kicked a lose floor bored in the ground causing it to fly off into the air.

"Fuck!!" I yelled to myself  at my now broken floor. I then felt cool air blow onto me so I looked down at where the wood once was. There was a huge hole in the ground and a faint blue glow coming from down there. I of course got curious and took off the surrounding boards. It wasn't an easy thing to do especially because I was still a little weak. I heaved as I pulled up the last piece of wood and sat down with my feet dangling in the hole. I felt a ladder on the bottom of my feet and decided that I might as well go down.

The ladder was a long climb down and at some points I questioned if I was in some sort of fairy circle. I laughed a bit to myself at the thought of needing to change my clothes inside out on this ladder. I finally made it to the bottom smoothly after about a minute of climbing down. I looked around and realized that I couldn't really see anything except for a book that was glowing blue a few feet back. I let magic flow to my hands to cause orbs of light that illuminated the room around me which I could now see was an old dusty library. The ceiling was high which was why it took so long to go down the ladder.

I walked to the glowing book that I could now see was laying on an altar like table and was locked. I tried to open it by my own means but every time I did it wouldn't budge. I should've known that it was enchanted by the blue glow that was radiating off of it. I gave up and put it back onto the table and within an instant torches on the was lit up with blue flames. My heart skipped a beat. I didn't know what was happening and I felt fearful. A long hallway that was made of dark stone was revealed, it was so long that I couldn't see the end of it. It was at the same time when I heard small footsteps and little squeaks echoing from down the huge hallway. I froze in place as I heard them getting closer. The thought of climbing up the ladder obviously crossed my mind but I couldn't bring myself to run there. I began hyper ventilating as I felt that this would be my final resting place and no one would be to find me.

Then to my shock and horror a small fox rounded the corner of the table and the squeaking I heard before were cry's of pain. The foxes paw looked broken and it was limping on it. I let out a sigh of relief as I knelt down to help the fox.

"Hey little guy." I smiled and reached down to hold his face. He nuzzled himself into my hand. "Let me take you home, I'll get you all fixed up." I spoke and reached out to pick him up to which he waddled into my hands. I scooped up the baby fox into my arms with ease and held him to my chest. I made my way to the stairs and realized that I needed both hands to climb up so I put the hurt animal in the top of my dress so I could have both hands to climb.

I made it to the top of the ladder and let the fox down when I made it to the kitchen. I grabbed some lose cloth that was in a cabinet and wrapped it around the hurt paw.

"Here you are, little guy." I smiled warmly at the baby fox. I stood up and went outside to grab some wild berries for the small animal.

It was cold outside but thankfully I only needed to go a few feet out. I came back in and put it into a small bowl and put it onto the ground to see the small fox eat all of them in the span of five seconds.

"God damn, you eat more then Swiss!" I giggled solemnly remembering all the times Swiss's stomach growled after he ate a whole meal. The tiny fox yipped out in response which I could only assume was a yip of gratitude. "It's getting late, let's get you to bed little guy."
