it was a summer evening, her favorite time of the day, where the temperature lightly cooled down and the light wasn't too bright to blind her and make her eyes squint. she laid on top of her bed, head slightly raised, just enough to look at the phone that she rested on her chest while she held it with fingers intertwined behind it, thanks to the extra pillow she borrowed from her parents' room.
there were 4 bluetooth speakers hanging on the ceiling, providing a high quality audio that allowed you to be completely immersed into the atmosphere, which's volume was low but enough for her to hear it clearly as she sometimes hummed the melody or quietly sang a few lyrics she remembered.
this was perfect, and she wished no one would interrupt this peaceful moment.
but not all wishes come true, that's why her mother knocked on her door but opened it anyway, exhausted sigh leaving her lips at her daughter's boring days and arms crossed on her chest. "haeun, is this seriously how you're gonna spend the rest of your summer holidays? you should hang out with your friends for a bit instead of just staying in your room all day."
park haeun sighed, stopping the music with the white remote controller and sitting it up annoyed, brushing the strand of chocolate hair that got in her eyes out of her face as she buried her face in her hands for a few seconds. "rei'll be in japan for the whole summer and she won't be back until like the day before school starts again. and jiwon is in italy right now. who am i even supposed to hang out with?"
mrs.park pinched the skin between her eyes frustrated, shaking her head to which haeun furrowed her brows at. what was even the problem? this is what holidays are made for.
"i did not name you summer just for you to waste your summer holidays like this. why don't you go socialize a bit with the new neighbors' kid? i heard he's your age."
haeun shook her head with a stern glare as a no, turning her phone on again before letting her back meet the soft matress she already missed.
she had seen him around the neighborhood a few times now, either walking his dog around or on a stroll with his grandma, but he looked like a goody-two-shoes and she hates people like that.
the woman took a deep breath before she stepped inside her room and confiscated her phone from her daughter's hands, earning a gasp from her as she outstretched her hand like she wanted to grab it but it was useless. "you'll have it back after you've talked to the new kid. and don't even think about going out, doing nothing and then coming back saying you did what i asked. i'll be watching you from the window."
and so, haeun was left with no choice but to follow her mother's orders, walking lazily towards the bathroom to make herself presentable in front of a stranger, applying just a thin layer of fondation and a few brushes of mascara. she wasn't exactly in the mood to do her usual make up for someone she doesn't even wanna meet in the first place.
even if she wanted, she couldn't show up in her pajamas, so she figured out a random tank top and a pair of short jeans will work for the 5 minutes conversation she's about to experience.
as she arrived in front of their house, haeun cursed her mother for sending her here against her will without even telling her what to do. how is she even supposed to start a conversation with him? she hasn't made friends in so long that she completely forgot how to start a normal conversation.
she knocked on the door, putting on the fakest smile ever and pushing her hair past her shoulder gently as to not mess up the curls she did yesterday out boredom that were now just slight waves in her hair.
the door swung open, revealing an ethereal boy around her age, dark chocolate hair styled poorly into a mullet as his bangs fell over his forehead with ends going in all directions, eyes sharp and cat-like with a black color that resembled a tapioca pearl. he had only a slightly transparent oversized white t-shirt, giving whoever he met a glimpse of his chest, as a pair of short black sweatpants covered his thighs, clearly implying that he wasn't expecting visits any time soon.
haeun would never lie about the fact that he was ethereal, almost, in the messiest state ever. she can't imagine what he looks like normally.
"oh you must be haeun, right?" the said girl nodded and smiled, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear and placing her hand on her chest before bowing her head at him. "sorry for the condition i'm in but i wasn't expecting any visits today.." the boy apologized to her while scratching his nape embarassed, avoiding her gaze as to not feel even more shame about how unpresentable he looks right now, especially in front of a girl. a pretty girl.
"i'm jungwon." yang jungwon smiled and bowed just like her, giving her a view of the dimple craved onto his left cheek. "you just moved in right? i haven't seen you much around."
haeun broke the ice with a pretty obvious question, finding the atmosphere between them extremely awkward to the point that she nearly spilled the fact that she was here solely because her mother forced her to and she would rather be laying on her bed while playing with her phone.
"yeah, i moved in like last month probably? and i'm usually out the whole day with my friends so i'm barely home during the day." he explained, digits fidgeting with the thin fabric of his t-shirt as he tried to brush off the embarrassing silence that enveloped the atmosphere as soon as he finished his sentence.
it's useless to say that this was the last thing he said before haeun took her leave, running to her house across the street to have her phone back.
