Chapter 35 - Dancer
Luz had started singing. He sang the first line, shooting her a wolfish grin after she whipped around.
God, he was singing the song. The. Song.
This was so staged. He planned it al-
Was that what he'd been scheming?!
Conniving son of a bitch!
But she couldn't be angry. Not really.
And so, despite herself, Peggy smiled that rare bright smile, and got up, leaving her drink at the bar.
He held her hands so gently as he spun her round, like she were delicate.
Peggy was so surprised when Malarkey took up the next verse that she nearly tripped as Luz twirled her towards him. He beamed down at her as he sang, and she felt her face begin to flush just a bit. And just as gently as Luz had held her, Malarkey had let her go after and love me for eternity.
"My dearest one,"
she made her way over to where Bull was sat and dragged him to his feet,
"my darling dear,
Your mighty words astound me."
He began to dance a little faster as her words picked up speed. It was some feat, and she felt she looked almost silly, 5' 5" in the arms of 6'+...maybe not silly. Just small. But Peggy felt so safe there, dancing with him.
"But I've no need for mighty deeds,
When I feel your arms around me."
Then it was Smokey who started the next bit so she danced her way to him, and once he had finished his verse, she began her next one and searched for her next victim. It was one Shifty Powers, as shy as ever and they made quite a pair. Both were evidently a bit shy. But it was cute, and quite tender.
Luz joined her in singing the last two verses, and laughing as she fought Martin to get him to dance with her. He was grumpy and stiff, but she laughed at him and he smiled back, glad to see her happy.
Even though it was over, the joy she felt was immeasurable. And to dance so wonderfully to the song her dad used to sing made it all the better.
But Luz just started again, and so she dragged various people in to dance with her, her brain whirling too fast to even contemplate thinking about her actions now. And the alcohol circulating in her system just made her feel all the more carefree.
Peggy led replacements round the dance floor, watching them miss steps and flush pink but she just smiled and spun them around.
Buck joined in at one point, Nixon even gave it a go but that was probably because he was piss drunk and so couldn't think better of it.
She didn't care how many she'd danced with now, she just wanted to keep on going forever.
Then it came to an end and she had to pause for a moment to just breathe. Her smile did not falter for a moment. Only brightening when she heard.
Somewhere a radio began to warble, and only for a moment did she wonder why the fuck is there a radio station playing music right now, because then she was swept away.
Joe Liebgott danced a mean Quickstep, and she laughed the whole way as he led her round and round. At least those lessons finally came in handy.
Her cheeks hurt so much and her feet ached but she didn't care. In fact she continued well into the night.
