Chapter 106 - Prisoner
"He wants a NonCom guarding each roadblock and at least two men watching every road out of town. Bull, Malark, you each take a Squad and one of these witnesses on a house to house search."
When Peggy had gotten the news, she'd been watching a poker game.
She hadn't cried. She hadn't sobbed. And she certainly hadn't screamed.
No.
She roared.
She sizzled with fury and her eyes blazed.
And so she marched down the corridor right after Floyd Talbert, because there was a snowball's chance in hell that she would just sit tight and wait for news.
No, Peggy would not sit by.
"Can we shoot this bastard on sight?"
Oh how she shared Don's sentiment.
"Try and take him alive."
"No promises," she snarled back at Floyd.
More and more people joined them, coming out of rooms, half dressed or cleaning teeth.
Peggy could feel herself trembling as rage bubbled up from somewhere very deep inside her.
"Where's Grant now?"
The question softened her, muted her anger for a moment and softened her steps. Yes. Where was he? How was he? She hoped it wasn't as bad as they said. A bullet to the head seemed impossible to survive.
"They took him to a Kraut hospital to see if they could drum up any good doctors."
That did not fill her with hope.
Peggy knew Gene had gone with Captain Speirs to keep Chuck stable. He was in as good a hands as he could be at the moment.
She went on that house to house search. With Don's squad. Knocking on every door with more force than strictly necessary and then barging in to allow the shaken witness to look over every face in the building before moving on.
It was probably for the best that Bull's Squad found the bastard. She might've killed the guy.
But now, she was through the other side of her incandescent rage. Now she did not tremble or shake or spit with her rage. No. Not anymore. Now she was calm, steady, methodical with her movements.
So, when she returned to CP and entered the room, she hung back and watched, but not for long.
"I'll be back later, I just need to fetch a few things. Treat him well boys."
And with that, she shut the door behind her and let the beating begin.
Outside were George and Floyd, sitting down to begin a card game of some sort.
"You don't happen to know where I can find a small side table do you?"
Half an hour passed, and she figured that everyone had at least gotten one hit in. In that time she'd changed out of her ODs into something much smarter, found a lovely round side table, a bucket with water and a cloth for it. She'd also acquired what she could only call a metal surgery dish (read stolen), cotton wool, bandages, surgical spirit, sulfa, and of course pliers.
So, waylaid with all of that, including the table, she returned to CP, and found Floyd and George still playing games. Tab commented on how he should have gone in and stopped it before either of them noticed her.
