Chapter 64 - Know

Finally dislodging her hands from her hair, she ran them through her hair almost continuously.

What the fuck what the fuck what the fuck.

No.

No no no.

This was all wrong. She was supposed to be on her own. Not being monitored. It was all going just fine.

Why'd they have to find the right fucking frequency now? Couldn't they just leave her alone?

No.

Of course they couldn't.

That's not how it works. It had never worked like that. Why would it change now?

"Margaret?"

Her head swivelled to look at Lewis Nixon. He'd spoken to try and get her out of her head.

"What do I do? I'm not...not..."

Another hand through her hair, the other settled over her eyes because maybe it was all a dream. Maybe it wasn't real. She didn't know which she wanted more, it to be real or it to be some weird dream.

"Sir, what should I tell them to reply with?"

Finally able to move and think somewhat straight, Margaret turned to Dick. Nothing was said but they had an entire conversation. She'd talk to them. She'd find out what they wanted to say. And then she'd come back and she'd share.

"Watkins will talk to them, take her to the radio that the signal came through on and let her be alone with it. If anyone questions this, it's an order from me."

Margaret nodded and was striding out the door.

Genesis didn't really wait for Zielinski. He had to run a few steps to catch up and get out in front. She didn't speak, let him do all the talking as her face hardened and she steeled herself.

Once everything was in order, she took the radio, and shut herself in the phone box outside. It was the only way she could be alone with the radio. It was cold, and leaning against the side made her shiver. There was ice on the inside of the glass. Her breath clouded even inside the little phone box.

"You've reached Genesis. Over"

The radio crackled before a voice came through.

"Good morning Genesis."

A man.

Could she place his voice?

She wasn't sure.

"How have you been faring? Over "

"Gunshot to the leg, had to go to a hospital for two weeks. Can walk alright now, it's healed up okay. Over."

She heard him hum at the other end, it must've been loud to be picked up. Then it clicked. Mr. Galloway. Why was he on the other end? She wouldn't say his name to confirm it was him, what if someone was listening? It was procedure to be as vague as possible, having to trust that the person the message was meant for would understand.

"Good good. Anything interesting happen? Over."

"People have died. I found someone. Our CO got shot up, nervous private."

Vague as fuck. It didn't do any of it justice. Interesting didn't even begin to cover it. Saying our may have been a mistake but it was out there now. Too late, no taking it back. But she was okay with that.

"Holland's a nice country, you should go when you get the chance, nice and warm even into September. Does get chilly and miserable quite quick though. Over"

Mr. Galloway chuckled, but it came through the radio sounding broken and grating. It made Genesis frown and pick at her lip as she waited for a response. She waited a while, having to listen to the muffled goings on at the other end, something was happening and she didn't know what. It set her on edge.

"Sir?"

The fuzzy far off mumblings stopped.

"Are you Michaёl?"

The line went very very quiet. Like everyone in the room at the other end of the radio had heard, and didn't know what to do. Was she not supposed to ask? She had a right to know who was giving her orders, who she'd been communicating with all this time, who was behind her training. Everything. All of it. Because she needed something to believe in, something concrete that she could follow because she could no longer just blindly follow, doing what she was told because she was told to. It was harder and harder to just do.

"No."

Well that was all she was going to get apparently.

"But they want to speak to you, hang on a moment."

It went quiet, apart from rustling on the other end. Outside of the phonebox she could hear life continuing on. Her heart started thudding in her chest. Michaёl wanted to talk to her. And they were allowing it. There was something going on and Genesis didn't like it. Something was definitely afoot but she couldn't even begin to fathom what it might be.

The radio crackled back to life and her eyes snapped to the sound.

"Hello Genesis."

Everything stopped.

It seemed even the world had stopped turning,

Sorry this is so late, but hey, it's still Friday. Anyways, I didn't like writing this chapter or the next as they don't feel well written, so I'm sorry about that. Also I stopped using Over when I shouldn't have simply because I got bored of how repetitive it sounded.
