Chapter 103 - Choke
Ron hadn't tried to stop Peggy from training with the men.
He'd seen her alone once, and saw just how tortured she looked. Upon seeing her like that he decided that she needed to be with the men as much as possible. He'd also heard from the men that her nightmares were worse than anyone's, not that any of the men openly admitted to their disturbed nights. She'd often turn up at a random door well past midnight and end up tucked up in someone else's bed. Not in any sort of elicit way. She just needed someone there.
Ron had been informed by Dick that he not only needed to keep an eye on her but also to just let her do what she needed. Ron had chuckled and made a comment about how she'd said she wouldn't go over his head. But she hadn't really, and he knew it.
After about a week, she came cautiously back to him, with her little address book and a pen.
Peggy tentatively asked if she could have his address to write to him in the event she made it.
"Leave this with me, and go find Liebgott and Sisk, you're heading out with them." At her confusion he continued. "We found a Nazi who was in charge of a labour camp."
Her eyes immediately hardened, and she nodded curtly before leaving to find them.
She found them, along with Webster, about to leave. So she hopped in beside Webster, and when asked she shrugged and said that Captain Speirs had sent her. They set off and she stayed quiet. Thinking.
What would one of those arseholes look like? Had he known what he was getting into? Was he forced? Did he choose? How could he live with himself afterwards?
They pulled up to a rickety farm house, it looked more abandoned than her house did.
Why was Webster here? He was complaining so much. Why did it matter what camp? He'd seen all the ghosts, smelt the burning flesh, heard about the execution chambers.
"What if he's innocent?"
There was that...
"You know what? What if he's a fucking Nazi commandant of a fucking slave camp?"
"Which one? You've no proof!"
Peggy was honestly glad she'd hung back with Skinny, she had a feeling the part of the conversation she was missing would've made her more irritated. The last thing she needed right now was to boil over again.
"Were you at Landsberg?"
A soft gasp fell from her mouth at the mention of the name and her head started to spin. Not here. Not here not here. Peggy gripped Skinny's arm, starting to breathe hard. Then she heard the door being kicked in and she snapped upright.
Breathing suddenly normal, she stalked in after Joe, because she was gonna see what this bastard looked like, and she was gonna watch the light leave his eyes in the hope it would satisfy the ghosts. A scowl creased her face when she saw him. Ugh. Scum.
Her rifle was back in the car, her BHPs were sat at her sides.
The Nazi fuck kept looking at her instead of Joe, which made Joe shout more. That was what she needed, more fucking noise.
"Don't look at me," she held one BHP up and pointed at his face, "look at him, or he might shoot you."
Mm, the power running through her veins shouldn't have felt as good as it did. But she was finally quiet.
Half an hour ticked by, and the bastard was more scared of her than Joe. That might've had something to do with the fact that she only spoke very quietly and calmly, and was nothing like he could've expected. But Joe managed to get the information they wanted. He went to shoot but the little shit was quick and was running out. So of course she and Joe gave chase.
But then Joe's wouldn't go off, and he was screaming for someone else to shoot the bastard and Webster said no as Peggy steadied her aim.
Skinny beat her to it.
The Nazi fell.
Everyone else seemed content with that, and went back to their vehicle. But not her. She stalked to the body and saw him still managing to heave in breath somehow. So of course she kicked his body over so he looked skywards, and bent down to talk in his ear.
"You can die gasping just like countless did because of you."
As she stood back up, a bullet pierced his throat and she got her wish. He choked and the life drained from his evil eyes and the silence that followed smelt good. A little like blood, and a little like gunpowder yes, but freeing too.
Peggy stepped over the body without a second thought, and Webster shuddered as she stalked back over to them. But what was worse was how she immediately relaxed and smiled as she climbed into the back of the Jeep with Skinny as if she hadn't just killed someone.
The ghosts would leave her alone now? She'd avenged them?
On the ride back, Peggy held Skinny's hand. It was nice. He didn't mind, and let her fidget with his fingers. It seemed to help calm her right down.
