-reader's pov-

the sharp wind blew harshly at my cold face as I ran, close behind enola. she was fast but I was catching up, my hand reached out to grab her. my fingertips grazed the soft fabric of her clothes before it slipped away again. it was as if we were playing tag in the school yard or something.

loads of people yelled and shouted at us as we barged through, knocking over many objects and bumping into many people. until a horse carriage blocked our way, enola managed to swiftly turn and sprint away but I smashed nose-first into the carriage door.

"stupid bastard!" I spat, rubbing my pained nose that was bleeding and felt a little out of shape. the man in the carriage went to scold me but I was off down the street again, in enola's footsteps.

I found her, cornered in an alleyway, she had nowhere to go.

"can't run forever, ms holmes." I snarked, inching in on the trapped girl.

"or so you thought." she sassily replied, taking a tight turn on her heels before darting to the metallic pipe that traveled up the brick wall.

"you're crazy!" I called after her as she began to make her way up the pipe, grunting as she went.

"I know!" I heard her reply, almost at the top when I decided to keep on her tail.

I found a comfortable footing before attempting to pull myself up, I got about half way but then I began to slip a little. I had to make a boosted jump to the roof, else I'd fall.

squeezing my eyes shut and letting a deep sigh huff out of my lungs, I leapt upwards and grasped onto the gutter.

I stayed hanging there for a very short while until I managed to pull myself up and onto the tiled roof.

there I found enola, debating whether to make a jump to a certain window or not.

"to jump, or not to jump, that is the question." I teasingly quoted shakespeare.

"oh, ha, ha." enola spun around, showing an expressionless face, "very funny, but I am surprised you managed to get up here."

"what makes you say that?" I remarked, feeling almost insulted.

"it seemed to me as if you couldn't be bothered, grail does seem the man to pay little." she sighed, now having cracked the mystery of who I was.

pursing my lips, I replied, "how'd you know that?"

"well, no other random girl would just start chasing me like that, would they now?" enola asked rhetorically and I scoffed.

"hm, I don't see how you're going to get down from here.." I said, trailing off as I looked to the ground below, it was quite the drop.

"could say the same for you." enola replied, already finding herself a way out. she was tasked with climbing across to that window, using a crumble in the roof tiles for a stable footing.

I lazily watched, my arms crossed as she stepped closer and closer. until suddenly, she misplaced a foot and went slipping down the roof. clinging onto the gutter for her life, she gasped and panted in shock.

"not the best of climbers after all, eh?" I commented, slowly walking over to the roof that she hung from.

"just help me, please." she begged, scared for her life.

"who ever said grail wanted you alive?" I smirked before sitting down and carefully shuffling my way down to where enola hung from.

she looked up to me, eyes wide with fear and hope for mercy. truth was, I did want to save her. something inside of me wanted to save her.

"sure." I plainly said, grasping onto her right hand before offering aid to her left as well. she took this help and I pulled her up, straining and grunting as I did so.

once she was back up on the dirty rooftop again, she just sat beside me as our feet dangled, before asking, "why did you help me?"

I hesitated, thinking of an answer before replying with, "I'm not sure."

"you're not sure?!" enola repeated, totally bewildered.

"yeah," I told her, twisting my head to face her, "I'm not sure why I did that."

enola didn't say anything back this time, except a very small smile did curl upon her lips, "well, thank you, anyway."

"you're welcome, anyway." I beamed lightly before standing up and brushing myself off, "still remember I'm meant to be on the hunt for you, so do not mention this to anybody, alright?"

"..alright, yeah." enola reluctantly replied, standing up too.

I hummed in satisfaction, "catch me if you can, ms holmes." and with that I stepped right off the edge of the building. gravity took over during my fall, the impact looked as if it wouldn't be too bad until.. BOOM!

I landed face-flat on the solid pavement, a chuckle rang out from above.

"so smooth." enola jeered, before disappearing out of eyeshot. leaving me to just lay there, groaning out in pain to myself.

why did I do that?

it was as if I was trying to impress her.. wait, hold on.

why would I want to impress her??..
