-reader's pov-

"and you still didn't catch her?!" grail ferociously spat into my ear. specks of his saliva sprayed at my ear, causing me to cringe in disgust, "you are pathetic!"

"sorry, sir." I mumbled, biting my tongue and looking down to the musty floor.

"I'll show you sorry." he snarled, "I am giving you one last chance, you hear me? one."

"yes, sir." I replied, my tone low and practically silent.

"lyon matchstick's masked ball." he recalled, still annoyed with me, "you are to attend, and get that girl at all costs. you follow her everywhere until it's silent and you can make your move, got that?"

"even if she goes to the bathroom, sir?" I asked, putting on a fake innocent voice.

"I am not in the mood for jokes, l/n." grail gave me a hard shove in the back, "off you go."

I sighed and muttered a swear under my breath before setting out to gather up some supplies I'd need for this 'ball.'

————————

cheap, flimsy-looking mask in hand, I trailed up to the large, marble building. I noticed everyone else wearing long, elegant dresses and smart suits, these were very unlike the scruffy dress I had rocked up in.

it was slightly battered and a layer of dusty mud was occupied at the hems. it caused many people to give me disgusted looks as I lazily strolled in.

the large room was decorated with golden chandeliers, the candles standing tall with small flickering flames. round, clothed tables were located around the hall, these tables had designed cutlery and exquisite-looking cakes and other desserts on top of them.

I had arrived pretty late, I'd missed the big speech but it didn't matter, I wasn't here to dance or.. find love and all that stuff. I was here to find enola.

I searched around, my eyes scanning the place for any trace of the fair brunette.

suddenly, I heard a gather of girls giggling from the distance. I turned around to find the collection of girls, all of them around the same age as me, whispering to eachother. so I decided to head over, to see what all the fuss was about.

"hi?" I greeted awkwardly, unsure of how to start a formal conversation.

the girls stopped giggling and looked me up and down, their smiles fading. "go back to the streets, you filthy thief." one of them sneered, "where'd you get that dress from, the bin?"

I harshly bit my lower lip as anger boiled within me, "no, actually." I replied, my eyebrows creasing in frustration.

"hm, shocking." the same girl said back. I was seconds away from throwing a forceful punch right at her smug face until someone stopped me.

a warm hand gripped my clenched fist, holding it still gently. "she's with me, actually." a familiar voice spoke, I turned to find enola. something sparked within my heart at the sight of her.

the group of girls quietened down, "of course she is." I heard one of them mutter. enola shot them all a look before she began to drag me along.

"what are you doing here?!" she quietly cried out, we were now tucked away in a corner.

"I haven't given up on my mission yet, enola." I reminded, "I'm trying to capture you, but it obviously isn't going as planned."

"you may as well give up." enola told me, "if you're so desperate for money-"

"-how much?" I cut in, many of my hopes rising at this.

"gosh, let me finish." enola said with a light chuckle, "look, if you want money.. I can give it to you. but, on one condition."

"what? what condition?" I said instantly.

"you will owe me a favour." she replied, a smile spreading upon her lips.

"and what will that be?" I huffed, expecting it to be some huge issue that I'd have to sort out.

"teach me how to dance." she simply said.

"what?" I remarked, my eyebrows furrowing in utter confusion.

"teach me how to dance." she repeated, growing impatient.

"but what? why? you'd like to dance with someone?" I inquired, curious to know.

"well yes, obviously." she rolled her eyes.

"alright, alright, calm down." I uttered jokingly before she pulled at my hand, leading me to the bathroom.

on the way I caught her eyeing a certain boy. strangely, my heart dropped for some odd reason, it was as if I wasn't expecting this?..

"oh, so.. that's the lucky fellow, hm?" I quizzed whilst gesturing my head to the smartly-dressed boy as we approached the bathroom door.

she scoffed, "I-I'm not here to dance with him. I'm dancing for information."

"you're a very peculiar girl, enola." I commented, baffled by what she had just said.

"could say the same about you.." enola trailed off once realising she didn't have a name yet.

"l/n," I told her, "y/n l/n."

"y/n l/n." she repeated the name on the tip of her tongue before we entered the bathroom, locking the painted door behind us.
