-reader's pov-
still following enola, despite the extremely close encounter back then, I exited the theatre with silent footsteps. she was a couple yards ahead, reading the letter she had found to herself.
after taking many turns, she now treaded across a smooth street, plastered with damp slabs of stone. my reflection glimmered in many of the clear puddles that I walked by.
everything was going well until I accidentally stepped in a deep puddle, with a lot of force. the water splashing loudly caused enola to spin around, curious. my eyes darted up from the puddle to look at her, she glared right at me. before I quickly darted off to take cover behind a marble pillar.
there, I held my breath, praying that enola would just shrug it off.
but she was a detective, so of course she wouldn't.
slowly turning on her heels, she pondered her way over to the puddle. looking down at it with suspicion as I continued to hold my breath, the slightest sound would instantly pull her attention to me.
"hello?" she called out, "I know somebody's here."
I tensed even more at this, she was going to find me and I couldn't escape this fate.
but I had thought wrong.
the sound of a glass bottle smashing rang through my ears. someone had obviously thrown a bottle somewhere in the near distance.
as enola scurried off to investigate, I managed to slip away, back down the street that I had came from.
relief flushed over me at the fact I had escaped but two close calls wasn't good enough, there shouldn't have been any.
suddenly, I felt a tight grasp on my shoulder. I spun around to be met with superintendent grail angrily peering down at me, his teeth still crooked.
"still haven't got that girl." he tutted through cracked lips, "and you be lucky I distracted her back there. you're not the best of spies, l/n."
"and you think I didn't know that?" I snapped at him, shoving his hand off my shoulder.
he sighed gloomily, "if you want the money, you better do better. meet me at 29 bell place tomorrow morning."
————————
I stood, my foot tapping against the wooden floorboards in the house grail had instructed me to attend. I was waiting for him, again.
a sickening smell floated in the air, as if something was rotting.. as if someone was rotting.
with this alarming news, I followed after the scent. occasionally sniffing until I reached a certain room. I creaked the door open and what I found inside shocked me to the core.
stood over a dead body was enola. the lifeless body had some sort of sharp object pierced through her stomach, gallons of blood poured from the wound.
enola's fearful eyes were pulled to the new face in the room, me.
I took a step back, horrified, I wanted to leave. forget about the stupid money. I span around to leave but bumped right into a suited man.
he grunted in confusion, "who are you? and-" he looked over to enola, "ms holmes?"
"i-inspector lestrade." she stammered, glancing down to the body again, "she- she's.."
"-dead." lestrade cut in, pushing his way past me carefully, "how'd that happen?"
enola stared down at the crimson blood that covered both her hands, "uh- oh, no, no, no. I'm investigating a case, a disappearance of a girl."
"-what, that girl?" he asked humorously, nodding down to the limp body.
"n-no," enola shook her head as I silently crept closer and closer to my only exit, "her name is mae. she worked at the paragon theatre, the matchstick factory. she was a dancer, she's friends-" she rambled, sounding as if she knew scarily a lot about this girl.
a repetitive clanging noise rang out from behind me, blocking my only exit. I backed into the room again, knowing who was about to enter.
and as expected, grail opened the door and searched the room. his eyes falling upon the fresh corpse.
"good morning." he grinned, showing off his ugly teeth again.
"morning sir," lestrade replied, "I was sent to investigate a possible disturbance. someone heard some screams and I discovered these young ladies."
grail looked to me carelessly, "well, I know it wasn't her. but the other.." he then turned to enola, "name?" despite knowing fully well what it was.
"enola holmes." she told him, "investigating the disappearance of sarah chapman."
"sarah chapman?" grail repeated, walking into the room even more, "how intriguing, so am I. she's wanted for theft and blackmail."
"-blackmail?" enola curiously repeated, I couldn't do anything but watch.
"yes, detective." grail replied before placing a hand on the body, "still warm, no rigor mortis. when were the screams heard, inspector?"
"ten past the hour." lestrade answered simply.
"when did you arrive, detective?" grail's glance fell upon enola again.
"a-around the same time." she stuttered, before her expressions quickly changed once realising what she had said.
"even more intriguing.." grail approached enola slowly.
"n-no, I was trying to suppress the blood." enola protested, holding up her bloodied hands, "I-I was trying to save her."
"or trying to get information out of her." grail cut in, "give her a search, inspector."
"oh, I couldn't." lestrade shook his head, "I can't pat her down, sir."
"come along, lestrade." grail said, "let's not be coy about this, she's a detective. she knows the rules."
"yes.. um.." lestrade awkwardly waddled over to enola, unsure of where to start.
"gimme that bag!" grail demanded, enola reluctantly handed him the small satchel. he unclipped it and peered inside, pulling out a letter, "what's this?"
"my evidence." enola answered him.
"and that?" grail eyed the tuft of paper sticking out from her tucked sleeve.
she pulled the paper out and hid it behind her back, "it's nothing." she excused.
"then why are you hiding it?" grail pressed, growing even more suspicious, "found at a murder scene with a freshly dead corpse, harboring evidence isn't gonna look good."
"why not ask her?" enola gestured over to me as I sheepishly just stood there, "she was here too!"
"don't tell me what to do, missy." grail snarled, "now give us that letter."
enola sighed and went to hand him the letter but before she did, she kneed him right in the groin.
"pffft!" I exclaimed, covering my gaping mouth with my hands as grail howled in pain.
"stop bloody laughing and get her!!" grail yelled at me, and I was quick to act.
I pelted out of the room and after the runaway enola. she was already busy beating up other men before leaping out of the open window.
"what the- bloody hell?!" I cried out in astonishment, watching as enola swiftly parkoured her way to the ground.
I sighed to myself before trying my best to copy her actions, it surprisingly turned out alright. I probably only suffered about a bruise or two from the impact so I began to sprint after her, my legs moving as fast as they possibly could.
