-reader's pov-

bored out of my mind, I rested upon tewkesbury's leather sofa. it was surprisingly comfortable despite being covered in paper that had something to do with politics stuff. tewkesbury groaned and complained all the while about how difficult and stressful his job was.

"-and I have these huge responsibilities and one wrong choice will ruin my whole career and reputation-" he babbled whilst looked up from his work, "are you even listening?!"

"-huh?" I pulled my attention over to him.

"are you even listening?" he repeated angrily.

"um, no." I smiled a fake smile before returning to staring at the ceiling.

tewkesbury scoffed to himself before getting his head down again, though I did feel a little bad for him.

I sighed quietly, "so what is it you have to do, then?"

tewkesbury looked over to me, his eyes finally hopeful, "I'll show you, come over here."

lazily, I pulled myself up before relocating myself to sit beside him and look down at all the cursive writing. it did look pretty hard to understand.

"-so like, what is it? I don't get it." I said, looking over to him again.

"it's okay, you wouldn't be able to help me." he replied, "I honestly just need someone to reassure me my choices are correct."

"well then, your choices are correct!" I beamed whilst slapping the palm of my hand onto the arm of the sofa.

"-really? flooding bilge water into a clean lake is a good idea?" he gave me a funny look.

"-oh, um no." I shook my head, "probably not."

he let out a long groan as he rolled his head up into the air, "I don't know what to do."

"would enola know?" I offered thoughtfully.

"doubt it." he rubbed his eyes tiredly, "she always seemed the sort to enjoy more lively things, y'know?"

"what do you mean by that?" I shifted into a more formal position at the mention of enola.

"-well, she comes from some big house in the countryside somewhere." he said, "shropshire? herefordshire? somewhere out west but, y'know, I don't really see her as someone who'd want to sit behind some desk all day and write."

I nodded along as I absorbed this information, "maybe that's why she's a detective?"

"-probably," he agreed, "she might also want to put up a challenge to her brother, I'm not sure."

"how did she save your life though?" I asked, full of questions.

"last year, it's a very long story but, basically, my grandmother tried to kill me." he summarised.

"oh?" my eyebrows creased in pure confusion, "right."

"..yeah." he said under his breath, "very strange story."

"-well, I just hope she's okay." I said, returning to a more comfortable position.

"me too." he said sadly before settling down to work again.

hours had passed yet still no sign of enola, day had turned to night but still no enola. I had been lazing around for what felt like centuries but still no damn enola.

I was practically asleep until a knock at the door caused me to stir and fully open my eyes. tewkesbury and I shared a look before racing to the front door. he yanked it open and my heart flickered madly when I saw enola.

"oh my god, enola." I immediately plunged into her embrace, she stumbled back at first. she was startled and maybe even a little flustered as she wrapped her arms back around me, comfortingly.

"it's okay, I'm here." she spoke softly as I broke from the hug, so happy to see her that I could scream.

"-but, how did you break out?" I inquired.

"very good question that I will answer later." enola replied, "but for now, I need to tell you what's going on with the missing girl. I need you guys' help."
