Chapter 32

" Why are these here? "  Her lips parted and she looked at Armin over her shoulder at the dark basement where the rest of the survivors were. She approached the darkened room full of leftover supplies, she went towards the hooks hung up on the nearest end of the wall. Her fingers skimmed across the green fabric of the nostalgic scout's uniform. She smiled softly, she unhooked the cape from the hook on the wall and wrapped it around herself. She turned towards Armin, holding her arms out. Despite the current situation, Armin's lips formed a smile. 

" Em. " Mikasa's soft voice echoed from outside the room, both Armin and her turned her back and looked towards Mikasa. Mr. Braus stood beside her, he looked tired. " Mr. Braus, I'm glad you're okay. Are they-"

"The little ones? They've been asleep for a long while now, I reckon they've nearly exhausted all of their energy." Emma let out a relieved sigh, following the few toward the basement where all of the children sat. "You're still here, why?" Gabi stood in the middle of the room, she was one of the kids among many who stayed hidden inside the basement. Isabel and Farlan lay asleep beside Nicolo who sat crisscross on the floor, each head in his lap. "Believe me, I'm not going to make any more trouble, I just want my friend back. So please, let Falco go, I swear you'll never hear from either of us again." Emma looked at Armin who then shared a glance at Mikasa. "What's wrong?" 

"...So his mom got transformed into a titan and he's going to have her eat Falco? Why?" Emma gulped, she felt a sense of guilt, she wished she stopped Conny when she had the chance. " When Conny's mom got turned, the limbs on her body were so weak she couldn't even roll over. He left her, and for four years Conny's been visiting her spot." Gabi fell to he knees, sadness rained over her. "I'm sorry, but still I can't let Falco die for it. Why do this, can't Eren Yeager use his power to turn Conny's mother back to normal? The founder is supposed to be able to do anything, can't he?" 

"I can't be sure he could do that, I think he would've done that for our comrades he's seen turn into Titans instead of leaving them for us to kill." Gabi grabbed Armin's shirt, clutching it into her small palms. Emma lifted her head towards the ceiling, tears piercing them, she took a sharp inhale and closed them. "If you don't know for sure then why can't you go and ask him? Does every person beyond the shores of the island really need to die? He doesn't have to go that far, does he? Ask him why he doesn't just destroy all the military bases! Isn't that enough? He had the power to strip the armor off Reiner! Don't tell me he can't!" Emma's eyes opened. "Can you tell me where Reiner is now?" 

"Why does it matter? He got hit by a chunk of the wall and he's too hurt to move!"  Armin crouched down to Gabi, grabbing her shoulders for the girl to look directly into his eyes. She backed up the second he did so but was unable to leave his unexpected grip. "When? When did it happen? He said it fell off him as the walls were collapsing." Emma's lips fell open. " Does that mean? When he brought the walls down-"

" He did it by breaking all titan hardening everywhere. " 

Emma shared a look of complete horror with Armin, her body froze and she felt a cold shudder among her shoulders.
