Step 19-Learn something from the past
I stared at my reflection on the mirror. I was totally amazed that I was able to prepare myself for this, and I looked really good. My dress, my hairdo, make-up...I looked like a princess. I finally snapped out of the trance when I saw a flash by my door. Dad was there holding a camera and grinning at me. "Hey! No fair," I said and pointed at the camera.
Dad chuckled. "No can do pumpkin. This is the best picture yet."
The doorbell rang. My heart almost leaped out of its hiding place when I heard the chimes. "I'll get it," dad said then trotted downstairs.
I looked at the clock. It seven o'clock. If that was Gavin then he was forty-five minutes early. Anxiety crept around me.  Suddenly I felt tense about seeing Gavin. Would he like my look? Would my dress clash with his tie? I heard the door open and I heard talking, but I couldn't make out the voices. I paced back and forth to shake the nervousness away. Was it Gavin or dad's employee...or even, was it Logan?
Okay. I really needed to calm down. Even Logan was going inside my head.
"Jo!" Dad called, interrupting my train of thoughts. "You're friend's here."
Oh. My. God. It was Gavin. I did another mirror check then went downstairs.
I almost fell when I saw who was at our door step. It wasn't Gavin, it was somebody else. The one who stood there was Stacey.
"Hi Joanne," she said. She wasn't wearing her prom dress, instead she was just wearing jeans and t-shirt. Her eyes were almost blood-shot. Had she been crying?
"What are you doing here?" I asked a little impolitely. Dad cleared his throat, signaling for me to watch my manners.
I looked at him slightly apologetically. "I'm gonna check my stew," he said then gave me a warning look before walking away.
When he was out of earshot, I turned to Stacey and raised an eyebrow. "Well?"
She fidgeted a little and just looked down. Her face was filled with sadness. "Look, I'm sorry for what I did to you."
I scoffed. "Do you think your sorry will do anything good?"
I might've hit a weak point in her because her eyes started to well up with tears. "I know it's too late."
Neither of us said a word for a while. I saw her shiver a little so I took pity and offered her to come in. I motioned for her to follow me in the living room. The silence still lingered around us. I deliberated about what I should do with her. Was it right for me to ignore her apology? Did she really mean it or was she doing a drama act to make me look stupid again.
It was really hard to forgive someone who hurt you. It wa really hard to trust someone who broke it once because trust is like a glass. When it shatters, you will hurt yourself picking it up again and putting it together again, only to find out that it would never be the same again.
Stacey finally broke the silence by spilling out the truth. "Ever since I saw the way Gavin looked at you, I felt really jealous. I knew Gavin really loved you. And me...nothing really important to him. Even though I loved him and gave him the love he deserved, he still longed for someone." She sniffed. "When we broke up, I felt really devastated so I ran to Logan and cried to him. I took shelter in his affection for me and used it as a shield so I wouldn't look like a poor girl who didn't get her happy ending." Well that wouldn't be fitting for her. I mean, she was the school's Queen Bee so she had to have a perfect life—even though such thing did not exist.
"And now, I see Gavin chasing after you, who is chasing after Logan," she continued. "Life is so ironic."
The silence hung in the air. I still didn't know if I could trust her words again or not. "Joanne," she said again. "I know it's hard to forgive me, but I care about Gavin. Please, don't hurt him anymore."
I really didn't want Gavin, or any one to get hurt because of me. I would rather be the one getting tortured and tormented than the ones I cared about. But everyone was meant to hurt someone, just like everyone gets hurt somehow.
"I didn't and don't want to hurt the guy," I told her, "but I can't promise you that no one's gonna get hurt. One way or another, I'll hurt someone and someone will hurt me."
                                              "I know."
"And, how about you? You should stop hurting Logan as well."
"I know that, too," she said. She's not that clueless after all. "That's why I'm letting go." What? What did she mean?
"Logan deserved a chance," I told her.
"I know. But I'm not yet ready to face another guy. Using somebody will only make my feelings worse."
It never occurred to me that Stacey and I were in the same situation. We both wanted to forget someone so we could start a better life. But the difference was, she took advantage of someone. Or maybe, we were the same. I might not know it myself, but maybe I was doing the same thing to Gavin.
"I better get going now," she said then stood up.
I escorted her to the door. Before she stepped outside, I asked her if she was attending the prom. She said she will but she's going to be late.
When she finally drove away, I gave a huge sigh. I hope things will go smoothly tonight.
Gavin came at the exact time he said he would show up. "S-sir, even-ning g-good," he greeted. His eyes widened when he realized his mistake. "I-I mean, good evening sir. I'm Gavin." I saw his nervousness as he talked to my dad. I couldn't help giggle as he stammered in front of my dad.
"Oh you don't have to be scared boy. I won't cut you in half. Unless you hurt my sweetie here," dad said then laughed out loud. Gavin and I joined him too.
"Don't worry sir. Joanne is in good hands. I will never let anything happen to her sir," Gavin said then glanced at me, which made me blush.
"Well, you should go now. You don't have all night," dad said. I smiled and kissed him on the cheek before walking away with Gavin.
When we got inside his red Maserati, Gavin pulled my hand and tied a corsage with white roses on it. "I didn't know what color of dress you'll wear so I picked white roses," he said.
That was so sweet of him. I was really hoping that the night will not end up with four broken hearts.
