Step 7 – Sing it if you can

I closed my eyes and let off a heavy sigh, trying to suppress my anger.  My day was looking smooth, until my best friends signed me up to a talent show at school without my permission. Many students had asked me to join their band or join the contest because I was good at singing and playing the guitar, but I turned them down.

My friends decided to join the show as a band where I was the lead singer and guitarist. June was the bassist and Rebecca was the drummer.

This wasn't the first time we formed a band though. When we were in sixth grade, we joined a contest too. That was the first time we performed as a band. It went well because we won second place in the contest. But it was nerve-wrecking performing in front of an audience so I decided to never-ever perform in front one again.

And now, here we were standing in front of the bulletin board that had the sign-up sheet for the talent show. "Again, why are we joining the talent contest?" I asked them.

June smiled apologetically, "Well...I think it's going to be fun. I kinda miss playing the bass. Becca misses the drums too," she turned to Becca, "Right Becca?" Becca nodded quickly.

"There's no turning back now Joanne. The list is final. C'mon, what if this is the last chance for us to perform together. You'll agree right? Please..." Becca pleaded, looking at me with those irresistible puppy eyes...

"No!" I almost passed out during our first performance, no way was I going through it again. June started to join her, also showing me her puppy eyes. "Okay, fine." I sighed. "When do we start practicing?"

"It's our free period and we have another free period after this, so I think we start now." June said then pulled Becca and me towards one of the music rooms in this school.

Thankfully, there were instruments there. I slung on a red electric guitar, June slung a bass guitar too, while Becca positioned herself to play the drums. I noticed Becca was holding some paper, "I picked the song to play. I chose 'You Belong with Me' by Taylor Swift. Here's the chords and lyrics."

I reached for the lyrics and studied it. It not simple, but not that complicated. I played this song so many times so I think this one's going to be an easy one. I heard Becca tap the drumsticks, signaling us to get ready. I started to strum, and sing. At that moment, I realized that I missed playing the guitar and singing.

After the song, I heard someone clap, and say "Great concert." My eyes darted to the sound of the voice. Gavin was leaning on the door frame, clapping his hands. "I never knew you could sing," he said. I felt blood rise to my cheeks. I couldn't see myself, but I knew that I was turning into a tomato again. Gavin chuckled, "You're cute when you blush." His comment only made me blush even harder.

I heard my two friends giggle behind me. I shot a quick glare at them before I turned to Gavin. "Are you stalking me?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.

He shrugged—he really shrugged a lot. "Not entirely. I just happen to pass by the music room. I was actually planning to play some songs myself, but instead I found you here." He walked in front of me, "So what's this all about?" he asked.

"Oh, we're just planning to join the talent show," June chimed in.

Gain looked at me with a huge grin on his face. "It wasn't my idea. They forced me into this," I raised my hand in defense.
