Step 9-Smile and be his friend

As my Literature teacher lectured on how great Shakespeare is, I stared out the window and watched the soccer players practice. I spied Gavin stealing the ball from another player and take a shot. Thankfully, the bell rang minutes later. I put all my things in my bag and went outside the room and straight to my locker. I shoved my books in. It was Thursday today so we were expected to be at the café. I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket. I took it out and found that Gavin just sent me a message.

                Fr: Gavin

Joanne, are you going to the café today?

                I replied.

                To: Gavin

                Yep. :)

I put it back to my pocket, slung my bag, and went to the parking lot. I went inside the car and drove off. Rebecca and June had their own car so we won't ride together today, leaving me a little lonely because of that.

I dropped by the library to return a book. From there, it took five minutes for me to get to the café. Becca's car was already parked near the café, and behind her car there was a red motor bike. I went inside through the back door and changed into my uniform. As I went to the counter, I passed by our manager who was going to his office, "Hi Mr. Ry." I said and smiled at him, he smiled in return.

I saw Becca serving someone a cup of latte to a customer. After serving she went to the counter and stood beside me, "Hey where's June?" she asked.

I shrugged. "No clue. She'll be here, sooner or later." I said.

I looked at the customers who were leisurely drinking something or talking to someone. I noticed a familiar face who was also looking at me. It was Gavin. I smiled at him. But he hasn't ordered yet because he wasn't drinking or eating anything yet. "Have you taken Gavin's order?" I asked Becca.

Becca frowned. "He's here? I didn't know."

I shook my head and went to Gavin. "You're such a stalker," I teased.

He just raised an eyebrow, "You think so tomato?"

I giggled. "So, sir what's your order?" I asked.

He took a menu and studied it carefully, then he turned to me. "I'll take...you." I felt myself blush, again.

"Gavin, seriously?"

"Fine, I'll take a Mocha Frappuccino and two blueberry cupcakes." I took it down and went to the counter. I came back with his order. "Thank you," he said.

I heard the door open up and turned to welcome the customers, "Wel—," my words faltered when I saw Logan enter the café. Surprisingly, Stacey wasn't with him.

"Welcome sir," Becca said. What a life saver. He sat down on the farthest corner of the café. He took out his camera and laptop.

I turned to Gavin, "Enjoy" I said then smiled at him. I went to the counter and nudged my elbow to Becca, "Take his order," I said, pointing to Logan.

She shook her head. "Nu-uh, you take his order. You gotta start getting used to not being used to treating him as a...friend."

I rolled my eyes. She was right, if I'm going to move on I'd better think Logan as nothing, but my friend.  No not think, but convince myself that Logan is just a friend. Nothing else.

"Hi," I said, he looked up from his laptop and quickly closed its top, "Are you ready to take your order?" He looked surprised to see me.

"S-sure, I'll have a cup of latte," he said.

I went to the counter and got his latte. I went back and gave him his order, "Here's your latte sir. Enjoy," I said. He was doing something on his laptop, he didn't even notice me. I cleared my throat. He looked up and he quickly closed the top of his laptop.

I placed his order on his table carefully. "Thanks," he said. I smiled at him then went back to the counter. I could feel his gaze weighing on me as I made my way back to the counter. Breathe in-breathe out. He's just a friend Joanne, I chanted to myself.

But still, thinking of him as a friend, felt wrong. I had to wave this feeling off if I wanted to start something new.

I gazed at Gavin who was looking at me. I smiled at him. He stood up and went to the counter. "I gotta go tomato," he said. I nodded and bid him good bye. I watched him ride the red motor bike. I then, concluded that my stalker loved driving red vehicles.
