Step 5-Ignore him

Friday Morning. I walked into my History class fifteen minutes before class started. I wanted to get ready for the quiz for today. I took out my History notebook and started reading. I felt someone sit on the chair beside me.

"Good morning," I familiar voice said—the voice of someone who greeted me sometimes on Friday mornings because the class sitting plan placed him beside me.

I looked up from my book and turned to Logan. "G'morning," I said then smiled at him. I went back to reading.

Ignore, ignore, ignore. That was my plan. If I kept entertaining everything about him, I might not succeed on my current mission—which I liked to call Mission X55 because...well I just liked calling it that.

As I read through the pages of my notebook, I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket. I took it out and saw a text message from Gavin.

From: Gavin

Good Morning Joanne! Hope you have a nice day :)

I noticed that Gavin had been acting differently for the past few days. There was something about him that didn't coincide with the Gavin everyone here at school knows. Here at school he was known for his popularity and being a guy who ignores someone who didn't belong to the Popular Clique; someone who is not most likely to talk to me—or even text me.

One could assume that he had taken interest in me—as what? I had no idea. But, if you did the Math, you'd get something imaginary. See, inside of me, lived that nerdy and geeky Joanne—which I kind of liked having. And this inner quality of mine only proved that there are personality clashes between me and Gavin—I think.

But, if Gavin didn't like me, then why'd he ask me on a date? Whatever the reason, I hadn't got any clue.

"Joanne, you seem to be in a very deep thought?" said Logan who snapped me back to reality. I almost forgot that he's still here with me. My ignoring-plan worked! I exclaimed in my head.

I looked at Logan again, "Ahmm, kinda. I find it a little hard to memorizing the names and places here," I said then went back to my notes. I'm trying to concentrate here Logan, if you don't mind.

"Want me to help?" he asked. I immediately snapped my head to his direction. Was he serious, or what? He had never offered help before!

There was this small part of me that kept nudging me to say yes. But, If I said yes, then I was not following my plan 'ignore'.

Who was I kidding? Who'd refuse that offer? Especially when the guy who looked at you with those sweet, blue eyes. I gritted my teeth. I was not about to give in and allow myself to get crushed to pieces, again. I'd be ashamed of myself if I gave in.

Just as I was about to say 'No,' Stacey suddenly showed up. Seriously, that girl springs out of nowhere! "Hey Logan," she chirped then turned to me, "Hi Joanne!"

"Hi," I smiled at her then went back to reading my notes. The bell rang and Mr. Cliff entered the room. He immediately passed the test papers and ordered us to start answering.

While I skim the test, I heard someone whisper my name several times. I ignored it, but I felt someone tap my shoulder, I looked and saw Logan looking at me, "Can I borrow a pen?" he whispered with a sheepish smile. I did a mental sigh and rummaged through my things. "Thanks," he said as I handed him my extra pen.

After answering it and reviewing it with fifteen minutes to spare, I immediately passed it to Mr. Cliff. He allowed me to go outside, so I went to the library. I had a free period after History class so I might as well finish the research paper on Chemistry. I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket as I did the research paper. It was a text message from Rebecca who was asking where am I. I replied back that I'm in the library. It didn't take a long time for June and Becca to find me.

"So, what was it you want to tell us?" June asked.

Oh yeah, I forgot. I had something to tell them. And that something was about Gavin. "Maybe, we should go to the field first."

June rolled her eyes, "If we must." We dragged ourselves to the benches near the soccer field.

"Now will you tell us?" Becca said as we sat on the bench.

"Gavin asked me to go to the movies tonight." I confessed. Three, two... one, I counted on my mind.

"SERIOSLY?!" they both exclaimed.

"When?" June asked. "How? Why?"

"Last week, during Biology class. He asked me. Why? Well, I don't know."

"Why didn't you tell us sooner?" Becca said then she pouted.

"I don't know? I'm not ready to tell you yet," I smiled sheepishly.

"What are you going to wear?" June asked

I paused. "Seriously, I haven't thought about it yet," I said.

We talked about some preparations then went to our lockers. We had P.E together after the free period. "Joanne!" someone said as I took the things I needed for P.E. I looked and saw Logan behind me.

"Uh, Hi?" I said. My heart started to beat faster.

"We have P.E together right? Want to go there with me?" he asked, tilting his head.

Joanne, keep it cool. Remember the plan, I chanted to myself. "Actually, I'm waiting for June and Rebecca. Sorry," I said.

Logan looked as little disappointed. "Oh, sure." Then turned away, leaving me staring at the place where Logan had been.

"Earth to Joanne?" said June behind me.

I turned to them, "Let's go?" I said.

Becca smiled at me mischievously, "Logan talked to you, didn't he?" she said.

I rolled my eyes as I walked off. They followed me, giggling. Sometimes, I hated the fact that my best friends know me too well.

"Today we'll play the game that all of you will enjoy." Coach Warren said, his voice booming inside the gym.  Oh no, not this game. "We'll play Dodge ball" the coach continued for me.

I would like to say that an example of teen discrimination was Dodge ball. Because when teams were divided the cool, the popular, and the athletic kids went to one side. While the nerds, the geeks, and the unpopular kids, like us went to the other.

"Stacey, pick your team," The coach ordered.

"I'll have Logan, Gabriel, Troy, Krista, Melanie..." Stacey went on choosing seven more students to her team. Like I said, the unpopular was left out.

We took our positions and started the game. As expected, half of our team was already knocked off. I evaded every ball the came to my way, but there was this one ball that Krista threw. It unexpectedly hit my head. My vision spun and I felt myself hit the floor. I closed my eyes for a while and calmed myself down. When I opened them, I saw Logan sitting beside me.

"Hey, you alright?" he said, concern painted in his face. His face was only a few inches away from mine. My heart went nuts. I could feel my face flush. His blue eyes focused on mine.

"Oh my, gosh Joanne I'm so sorry." Krista said.

Logan helped me stand up, his hand on my hip the other holding my hand. I looked at him again, then he smiled warmly at me. Oh my, gosh. Why was it that whenever I tried something to forget Logan, he suddenly makes me want to come back and adore him again?

"Uh, thanks. I can stand up now," I told Logan who reluctantly let go of me. The bell finally rang and we went to the shower room. My friends went straight to their classes, while I had a mandatory slip to see the school nurse. And to be honest, my head really did hurt.
