1.02 Adventure is Out There
Avery always loved sleepovers. Having pillow fights, painting nails, and playing truth and dare. This particular sleepover was different. She hated it. Legends about Mako Island scared her. A volcano was on the island and she thought when they got there, lava would spit out of it. It was four and she knocked on Kate's door.
The door opened to Kate, holding a sleeping bag and a bag on her shoulder.
"You ready?" Avery asked.
Kate looked down at herself then back at Avery, "No."
Avery laughed as Kate waved goodbye to her parents and closed the door.
The girls traveled to the pier that only took a few seconds. Avery caught eye of a motor boat and two people standing near it.
"Hey come on!" One of them yelled.
The voice belonged to Jamie and both, Kate and Avery followed her direction.
Once they got there, Kate threw her stuff in the boat and jumped into the boat, "Adventure is out there!"
"Someone is excited," Avery smirked and hoped into the boat.
Jamie and Luke smiled at each other before they followed their friends' motions.
Luke pulled the string to start the engine. The boat sailed across the water.
"So are you going to our high school?" Avery asked Kate who was sightseeing.
Kate turned, "Well isn't there only one high school here? So yes."
"Oh yeah," Avery regretted what she said.
Kate patted her, "It's okay."
Jamie's arms were against the edge of the boat, relaxing like she was on her couch, watching TV.
Luke remembered, "Guys remember this is for studying so no clowning around."
"You can't tell three teenage girls to not clown around," Kate laughed.
Jamie joined in laughing, "That is basically our lives."
Avery giggled as Luke groaned and ignored the girls the rest of the ride.
☼
Avery shivered as Jamie laid down her sleeping bag. The day turned into night. They stopped 'studying' an hour before because the sky got too dark.
"Hey look at the full moon!" Luke pointed up to the dark sky where the moon shined with the stars.
Jamie rolled her eyes, "Yes Luke, we need to be aware of that, probably because we are werewolves."
"There is no such thing as werewolves, that is impossible," Luke replied.
Kate rolled her eyes, "No dip, Sherlock."
Avery still shivered, signaling someone to notice.
Jamie finally noticed, "You okay, Avery?"
Avery shook more, "So cold."
Kate recommended, "Maybe we should get wood and create a fire."
"Great idea, I'll look on the beach, you guys can take the rest of the island," Luke handed out flashlights as he spoke.
Avery turned on the flashlight, "Wow. This is a bright torch."
Kate flicked the on switch, "A flashlight. It is called a flashlight."
Jamie rolled her eyes and did the same to turn her flash light on, "You Americans."
"You Europeans," Kate sighed and walked towards the trees, dividing the beach from the jungle.
Jamie and Avery followed behind. The girls didn't find any sticks. They didn't want to go back with no sticks so they still traveled, farther and farther from the beach. The girls suddenly, encountered huge rocks. Kate led and started walk across the rocks. But something happened. Avery knew something bad was going to happen since they were going far. Kate was gone, all that was left of hers was the torch or flashlight, Kate would say.
"Kate!" Avery screamed and kneeled to the hole, shining her torch into the hole.
Jamie kneeled next to her and shouted, "Kate! Please tell you are alive!"
"I'm fine!" Kate's voice screamed from the bottom.
Avery leaned forward into the hole to get a closer look. She might have gone too far. Avery fell forward. Jamie tugged Avery's shirt but Jamie fell down with Avery, down the rabbit hole. Avery's face went face first into the sand. Jamie pushed Avery more into it.
"Thanks for the mattress, Avery," Jamie smiled as Avery stood up.
Avery screamed, "Kate! You down here?!"
"Yeah! Over here!" Kate's voice came out of nowhere.
Jamie stood up to her feet and followed Avery, wandering, trying to find where Kate is. Avery found stairs, leading up to somewhere, maybe to where Kate is. They did not only find Kate but a huge water pool. Kate leaned against the rock, cave wall. Avery looked above to find an opening. The full moon was peaking over.
"Wow," Avery breathed out.
Kate asked, "Do you think we can climb back up?"
"Nope. It is too steep," Jamie shook her head.
Kate nodded and looked at a hole in the wall, near the pool.
"Hey look, a way out!" Kate pointed at a opening.
Jamie came closer to the edge of the pool, "Okay, come on, lets go in!"
She leaped and dove in the water. Kate dove after. Avery walked into the water and went under. She felt the water filling up her lungs and swam up. Her feet struggled to keep her above the water. The three girls looked above to find the moon, sparkling above, showing its reflection in the pool water. Some impossible happened next. Bubbles started to fill up the pool.
"What is happening?" Avery wondered out loud.
They watched as water bubbles started to fly up to the full moon. A few moments, everything disappeared. Like it never happen, only a memory.
"Take a huge breath," Kate breathed heavily before she dove under.
Avery and Jamie followed Kate's motions. They followed her through the opening, it took about 20 seconds before they went up for air. The next thing they heard when they were above water was their breathing. Avery turned after her breaths towards the island. A flames lighting up the darkness.
"We must have taken too long," Kate turned after her.
Jamie started to swim towards the island, "Come on! Luke is probably worrying about us!"
Avery stayed put for a moment, recovering after what just happened.
She thought to herself "That was nothing. Probably the full moon messing with me."
Avery swam but didn't know that she just lied to herself. It wasn't the full moon messing with her. It was the full moon who did the magic.
