1.05 Breaking In
I dedicate this chapter to @Sarawashere101 for reading my story and I hope she likes this chapter.
Avery popped her head above the water to find herself in the pool. Luke was sitting on the sand and his laptop was plopped on his crisscross legs. Jamie and Kate were sitting on the rock in the pool.
"Sorry that I'm late," Avery apologized and swam to the rock.
She took a seat, "Homework."
"First thing," Luke looked up from his laptop, "Why was Mr. McCartney staring at your necklace, Kate?"
Kate shrugged, "I don't know why but I found it here. I think he is connected to this. Has he ever touched water?"
"Yeah," Avery nodded, "But he hasn't popped a tail."
Jamie thought with her mouth, "Maybe he knew someone."
Luke agreed, "Yes. So here is the story. A mermaid who knew him threw a locket in the pool. So when you wore it, he must have recognized it."
"So he probably knows I'm a mermaid," Kate slapped the water, "Great. Day two and someone already knows."
Luke reassured her, "No. There is 80% he knows, but the other 20% could mean-"
"That he thinks that you just know something," Jamie added.
Luke nodded as Avery suggested, "Well if he knows something about this, he might have some papers about it."
"That's great idea," Jamie yelled with happiness, flowing through her, "Let's break into his classroom and see if he has any papers."
Avery gulped, "Into a teacher's classroom? I have never done that before."
"Neither have I," Kate replied, "But it's for a good cause. To find out what has happened to us."
Jamie gave out the game plan, "So us three, go into his classroom searching for stuff and Luke will distract him."
Luke asked, "Why me?"
"You are a nerd so is he so you guys connect," Jamie turned her head towards Luke.

Lunch the next day was crazy for Avery. The plan was for Luke to distract Mr. McCartney and her, Jamie and Kate would scavenge for information on Mako.
Avery, Jamie and Kate peeked behind the wall. They watched Luke go up to Mr. McCartney. When he started to talk to the teacher, he slid his hand to his side and gave thumbs up. The girls smiled and turned the other way, towards his classroom. This reminded of Mission Impossible, a movie that Jamie made her watch. They opened the door to his classroom.
"Okay," Jamie explained, "Just look for anything about mermaids, Mako, full moon and my test."
Kate and Avery looked at her with a confused face.
"Sorry, I think I failed," Jamie had looked like the nervous emoji, "Anyway get to work!"
They broke up. Avery went in one corner. Kate searched his desk while Jamie went through the cabinets. Papers flew everywhere in the room.
"I got nothing," Avery threw papers out of her hands and groaned.
Kate was focusing on going through his drawers but replied to Avery, "Look in the trash. Maybe he threw it in there, when he saw the locket."
Avery followed Kate's direction and ran over to the trash can. All she could find was many pieces of gum that Mr. McCartney made students take out, pieces of pencils and a piece of paper.
"Hey guys," she screamed with excitement, "I think I found something!"
Kate and Jamie looked up and darted to Avery who was unraveling the crumpled up paper. They all surrounded her.
"Dear, Lewis," Avery begun to say.
"Lewis? What kind of a name is Lewis?" Jamie chuckled.
"Shush," Kate whispered, "Go on, Avery."
Avery nodded and continued, "I'm getting old and I know my end is upon me. I was writing my will and I wanted to make a personal letter to you about what I will leave you. Most importantly, my research. You have to keep it safe. You can't let anyone is it or else they will find out about Mako, Mermaids, anything."
She knew that was enough. They all stared at each other.
"Who was it from?" Jamie asked.
Avery looked at the bottom, "Max Hamilton."
"Okay," Jamie walked away from the huddle, "So there is another person who knows about Mako?"
Avery stuffed it into her pocket, "We might need it."
"If I was a person hiding mermaid information, where I would I hide it," Kate thought for a moment before she went on, "Water! Where does he store the water?"
"Over there," Avery pointed over to the closet that Jamie did not check yet.
Kate rushed to it and opened it. A huge gallon of water, with a unsee through case, was stored. Avery and Jamie stood behind her as Kate hand went behind it. She stiffened up. Avery knew she found something. She pulled something out. It had been a leather, messenger bag. Kate peeked inside of it.
"It's good, lets go!" Kate ran out of the classroom.
Avery yelled, "We have to clean up!"
Jamie rolled her eyes, "She is going to stuff it in her locker and we are going to clean up."
Avery laughed, "Come on, let's start cleaning."
