Fear is a powerful emotion that can consume us, paralyze us, and make us question our abilities. It can manifest in various forms, but perhaps the most profound fear is knowing that no matter how hard we try to save someone, we will ultimately lose them. This fear stems from the realization that some things are beyond our control.

Hannah had never experienced this kind of fear. Sure, she'd been sleeping with one eye open every night since the outbreak, afraid of getting infected in her sleep, but this?

This was different, this kind of fear felt much more painful...

The glass doors flung up as Hannah forced her way inside, dragging along her injured friend. Chaos had broken out on the streets and the hospital seemed to be their only solution. Sirens continued to blare outside, the noise becoming muffled as the doors closed behind the two girls.

Hannah's heart pounded in her chest as she rushed through the crowded hospital, struggling to keep Riley on her feet. The groans of the infected echoed through the hallways, mingling with the cries of the injured. The stench of death hung heavy in the air, making Hannah's stomach churn.

Huffing with exhaustion, Hannah had finally made it to the hospital, though it seemed to be just as chaotic as what the two had just escaped out on the road. Her sides burned from the heavy breaths that were wracking her lungs and chest, as Hannah set her friend down to rest.

One look at the girl and she could see just how much worse it was for her; Sure, Hannah was exhausted, but at least she was unharmed, unlike Riley, her best friend. The girl winced at even the slightest movement as she continued to pant from where she sat; Hannah had taken notice of just how pale the girl had gotten; how easily she'd broken out in a sweat despite the cool air from within the Hospital walls.

"Stay with me, Riley," Hannah whispered, her voice laced with desperation and exhaustion. She glanced down at her best friend, who simply nodded, clinging on to an old, beaten-up stuffed lion. The poor stuffed animal had seen better days, yet it was all Riley had left from her past self, A gift from her father. Sweat streamed down Riley's face as she sat on the ground, the once vibrant innocence of her friend seemed so fragile now, overshadowed by the looming threat of the infection.

"Just stay here, I'll go see if anyone can help" Hannah spoke reassuring her sick friend. Hannah hesitated to leave the sick girl there, but she had no choice, not if she wanted to find help. Desperately she shoved past the line of injured people, trying to make it to the front desk.

Hannah grumbled at the number of people piled into the hospital seeking help. Even the hallways seemed to be overcrowded with sick people, yet she'd barely seen any staff walking around.

As she made her way to the front desk, ignoring the complaints and curses from other people waiting in line, she noticed the two women sitting behind the desk; The only staff member she'd seen since they got there. Their faces seemed panicked as people continued to yell and cry all around them, begging to be helped from whatever injury they'd received.
