The once calm and peaceful road now resembled chaotic congestion, as the long line of cars had stopped moving, blocking the only way out of the city. It stretched like a winding ribbon, as trees covered one side of the road while the other was nothing but grass. not many people usually wanted to leave the city, but today was different, it was packed with cars of all shapes and sizes, their drivers desperate to escape the imminent danger that loomed behind them. The asphalt was dotted with tire marks, evidence of the panic that had taken hold of the people.
Cars honked and engines roared as they struggled to inch forward through the heavy traffic. The atmosphere was tense, filled with palpable fear. Dust hung in the air, kicked up by the countless vehicles fleeing the city. In the distance, the once-bustling city looked eerily different. The sky above was tinted with a thick layer of smoke, slowly suffocating the once-vibrant skyline.
Amongst the chaos, Hannah stood, leaning against John's unmoving truck while he made conversation with the car behind them. They'd been stuck there for hours as the never-ending sea of cars only seemed to grow bigger with more and more people trying to flee the city, but hadn't moved at all, leaving them all stranded there, watching the city from afar.
Riley was busy trying to make friends with other kids stuck in cars while Sarah kept to herself, sitting in the truck patiently. The girl had grown used to the group since that day in the store, yet still preferred to keep to herself. Roxie was busy trying to figure out what the holdup was ahead. Her uniform proved to be more of a disadvantage than anything else as others seemed to think the woman knew everything that was going on with the outbreak and would get defensive when she told them otherwise; The fear and panic managing to get the better of them.
Hannah watched as John began giving directions to another group who'd decided to go on foot instead, when people began yelling further up the road, catching her attention.
"Back off!" Roxie yelled swatting the hand of an older man away as she began walking back to the truck, a scowl adorning her face in the process, clearly ticked off by whatever it was the man had done.
But it seemed he wasn't finished, as he leaned forward grabbing her arm in an attempt to get her attention, which Roxie wasn't pleased with. The two began loudly arguing as the man's group began joining in, trying to defend him without even questioning who was in the wrong. Hannah began walking towards the woman, a lump in her throat at the thought of having to fight against men twice her size; something Roxie had been training the girls for since they first met, yet Hannah still didn't feel prepared to do so.
The nerves didn't last all too long as John rushed over signaling for the girl to stay back as he attempted to handle the situation before things could get any worse. Hannah stared at the back of John's head, trying to make out what he was telling the older man when a car door slammed behind her. Sarah caught up to the girl, standing beside her to watch the altercation as well, a nervous expression on her face.
