The car approached a long line of vehicles, all converging on a military blockade that had been set up at the edge of the city. Soldiers were moving up and down the rows, inspecting each car, checking for injuries, and ushering people into separate lines for men and women.
As they pulled up to the blockade, Liv was instructed to step out and join the women's section. She glanced back at the others, worry etched on her face. "I'll see you on the other side," she said, trying to sound confident, but her voice quivered slightly, her confidence diminishing at the thought of being on her own.
Ethan nodded, giving her a small, reassuring smile. "We'll find you. Just stay safe."
"Stay here until further instruction" A female soldier ordered the three boys before escorting Liv away.
Vince's mind raced as he watched the soldiers methodically check each car, their faces emotionless, their movements efficient. He glanced back at Will, whose condition was steadily worsening. Will's face had taken on an even paler hue, and his breathing was becoming more labored with each passing minute.
Suddenly, Will reached into his pocket and pulled out his military ID, thrusting it into Vince's hand. "Take this," he muttered, his voice hoarse.
Vince looked down at the card in his hand, confusion furrowing his brow. "What? No, you hold onto it. You can give it to them yourself."
But Will shook his head, his eyes hardening with grim resolve. "We both know they're gonna shoot me the second they see this wound. I can't take any chances... I'm not gonna drag you guys down as well." He scoffed.
"Shut up, you're coming with us... it's not like they'll let us in just because we have your ID, you need to be there." Ethan quickly interrupted, leaning over the passenger seat to get a better look at the sick teen.
Vince opened his mouth to argue but Will cut him off, his voice rising with a mix of frustration and fear. "Stop being delusional, Vince! Look at me, I'm fucked. They're not gonna let me go through, but you... you've got a chance. You need to take it, for Briggs... Get him out of this mess."
The mention of his younger brother caused Vince to pause, his heart clenching. Will was right. As much as Vince hated to admit it, Will's chances of making it past the checkpoint were slim to none. There was no way the military was just going to let him through with a large bite mark on his arm, there was a reason they were checking everyone before letting them through.
"Hang in there, man. We'll make it out of this, all three of us. We'll get to Atlanta, and it'll be fine. Just... hang in there." Ethan reassured, trying to lighten the solemn mood inside the car with a bit of optimism.
Will scoffed, shaking his head. "Do you really think it's gonna be better in a bigger city? It's only a matter of time before Atlanta goes to shit, too. Best to just get what you need from Atlanta and head north as soon as possible.... take it from a military man, Trust me I know how to prepare for these types of events"
