One by one kids were being called out of class, escorted out to the frantic parents waiting by the gates. At first, it was only a few students here and there, but as the day went by more and more parents were beginning to crowd the school's gates, desperately trying to get their kids out as staff were practically running around the school halls, trying to calm down the sudden panic.
Hannah had no idea what was really going on; No one did. It was as if suddenly everyone was rushing to get out of town.
Everyone except her.
One after another, they filed out, leaving Hannah behind with a sinking feeling in her stomach. She clutched her bag tightly, her heart pounding in her chest, wondering when it would be her turn.
Beside her, her best friend Riley fidgeted anxiously, worry etched across her face. The teachers were bustling around, their voices hushed as they discussed a plan for the students left behind. But Hannah couldn't focus on their words. She couldn't shake the fear that she was being abandoned, left alone in the midst of the impending chaos.
Whatever was going on, she knew she didn't want to face it alone.
As the day continued, her classroom was practically empty, only a handful of students left, staring out the windows, waiting for any sign of their family. Some of the teachers had also begun leaving in a hurry, refusing to elaborate on what exactly was going on outside.
Just as Hannah's despair threatened to swallow her whole, the classroom door swung open, and Riley's father, John, rushed inside. He was out of breath as he looked around the class, relief washing over him as soon as his eyes landed on his daughter.
"Riley, we have to go," he said, his voice filled with urgency.
Hannah's heart sank further, her disappointment flooding through her. Her best friend was leaving, escaping this nightmare while she was left behind. She managed a weak smile, though her eyes betrayed her genuine emotions. With a small wave, she watched Riley join her father at the door and disappear into the chaos beyond.
The substitute teacher didn't even question it, instead sitting in his chair once more and scrolling through his phone.
As the minutes stretched into what felt like an eternity, Hannah's mind spiraled into a vortex of self-doubt. She imagined the horrors that awaited her outside the school doors, imagining the streets overrun by the undead. If it was truly as bad as the parents believed, then perhaps she was better off being left to fend for herself.
Just as Hannah resigned herself to her fate, the classroom door creaked open once again. This time not as harsh as before. John reappeared, peaking his head inside the classroom with a defeated expression, as his eyes landed on the girl.
"Hannah," he called out, catching the attention of the substitute teacher. "I need to take Hannah with me." He explained.
Hannah didn't waste another second, before standing up to gather her things.
