"Hey, ya mind cleaning up your stuff?" I asked, peering over the bed at the cans and bottles on the floor. There was even a pack of apple juice in a can, which they had bought so that Artemis didn't feel left out.
"We'll go in after her and get her out before we get caught! Duh!" Jasper answered, sitting up on my bed. I shot my head at him, raising an eyebrow.
"That's a terrible idea." I said as I stood up and made my way over to Artemis. I grabbed the blanket that was sprawled out on his bed and draped it over his snoozing body. "And seriously, this place is a mess. The garbage bags are in the cupboard under the bathroom sink."
"Then what else are we supposed to do?!" He clearly didn't listen to that second part. "We can't just let her get caught!"
"She did say that she wouldn't get caught." I reassured them. "And I'm actually not kidding, I will not clean this mess y'all have made."
"Do you honestly believe that?" Pearl sighed, plopping down next to me on Artemis' bed. "Though she may be athletic, she's as clumsy as a pregnant cow."
"What in the hell was that analogy-"
"That's it, I'm going!" Jasper interrupted me as he swiftly jumped up from my bed, making it creak a little, and began to stomp over to the door, rolling up the sleeves of the black shirt he wore.
"Oh god damnit, you are not going!" I quickly shoved myself in front of him, cutting his way to the door. "You are going to stay here and clean up this goddamn mess!"
"Get out of my way, skinny." He groaned, rolling his eyes at me. "I'm gonna go get her. And for god's sake, I'm not cleaning your room!"
I stared at him, my mouth wide open. Could you believe this guy?!
"I'm not moving an inch!" I snorted, snapping my head away from him and crossing my arms. "Tell ya what, I'll go get her myself if it means that you'll clean."
"What? No way!" He boomed, looking more furious than ever. That shook me, but I stood my ground. "You won't be able to do squat! For once, could you just do what I tell you like you used to -"
"You really liked having me as your little puppet, didn't you?" I chuckled, aiming a blow at his face. He took a few steps back, and stared at me with his eyes wide. I stared back, my face heating up from embarrassment. You see, I was trying to knock him out so that I'll be able to go and fetch Bella by the time he wakes up - But this guy didn't even flinch.
Suddenly, I was able to catch a glimpse of a silver flash appearing behind Jasper, and all of a sudden, he was on the ground, and Pearl stood over his unconscious body with her hand in the air, fingers pressed against each other.
"You are seriously lame, you know that?" She asked me, flicking her hand and stepping over Jasper. "Kay, what's your plan?"
I shook my head, catching myself staring at Jasper on the floor with this very dumbfounded look on my face.
"The plan? I go and check if she found her way into the forest, and if she doesn't, I get her back?" I tilted my head, in confusion as to why she had to ask. "What else?"
"Wow. Okay." She grunted. "What should I do?"
I sighed, and pointed towards her, over her shoulder.
"Clean this goddamn mess." I stated, as blankly as I ever could. "This room better be sparkling by the time I get back."
I didn't wait for a response. I spun around and pushed past the door, not bothering to take my hat, or the scarf that Artemis had claimed for himself after I told him that I wouldn't accept a scarf that he'd dropped sushi all over. Damn, I missed that scarf.
But I'd soon come to realize that not taking my coat wasn't the greatest idea - It was raining like hell and all I had on was a t-shirt that got all soaked and clung to my skin. The campus was a completely different world at night time, I could hardly recognize anything. I don't even know how I ended up reaching that wall. I continued walking along the cement barrier, tracing my fingertips along the rough surface.
As I walked, I couldn't help but notice the warm lights of a small, two storey building standing in the midst of the grassy field. It was one of the portable libraries that the school had set up way back when the one inside the school ran out of space. They move all the older books into the portable libraries, after clearing out the big one every three years.
All I wanted was to go inside that library, out of the cold rain and into the warmth of the crackling fireplace that was so, very much real. It wasn't; It was mostly for display, one of those which is blocked off by glass, and all it takes is a flick of a switch to turn on. I wanted to grab one of those corny books I read as a child and huddle up in a corner behind a bookshelf where nobody bothered to pass by.
And the fact is, I almost hesitated. I almost did end up taking a step towards that comfort. It was only a flash of lightning and a loud clash of thunder that snapped me out, and reminded me of why I was even out here.
God, I do hate going out of my way to help others.
