With the cat and Bai He in the middle backseat, far away from the windows and far enough from the front windscreen that she wouldn't have a perfect view of the monstrosities and gore outside they were ready to go.
Everything was packed and there was no reason MK was hesitating to open the garage door and yet he was, sitting in the car with the garage controller in his hand staring at the door like it held life's answers. He just... wasn't sure this was the right choice. Should they have just stayed here and waited for people to come back? Waited for help? Was leaving just going to bring them untimely deaths?
No. He'd never let that happen, and they needed to find their parents. It was unlikely that people would come back for them, not with the number of zombies that had infected the area, and MK was determined to get Bai He somewhere safe so she could live a good life surrounded by family and the sky. If they stayed, he'd have to leave her alone to get more food, leaving her with the fear that he might not come back every time he left and that wasn't fair to her.
He just didn't want her to see what was outside. He didn't want to see her terror.
Taking in a deep breath he pushed those thoughts aside, pressing the button and opening the garage.
He turned the engine on, shifted the gears, and slowly drove out of the safety of her house and onto the street, Bai He clutching her cat close to her as she shuffled as far away from the windows as possible.
"We're safe in here, right? The monsters can't get us?" She asked nervously, seeking reassurance, and MK glanced back at her, nodding with a calm and sure smile.
"Of course! We're completely safe in here." He promised even though he couldn't know that but he was praying it was true as he saw zombies screech at the noise of the engine, the noise making Bai He gasp as MK watched zombies rush closer to the car, slamming their hands against the wood on the windows and trying to pry them off to get inside, the noise from their mouths scratching with horrible gargling and wailing and screeching.
MK kept driving, peering out into the growing group of creatures blocking their way through the gap he'd left free of wood in the windscreen so he could see. A face, a decaying, maggot-infested face appeared in the window, feeling ever so close to him as he suppressed a surprised yell and pressed down harder on the accelerator, knocking the thing off the windscreen and dislodging any of the zombies trying to get in.
He was sure they tried following but as MK drove down the street, avoiding cars left in the road, they couldn't catch up and the ones in front were quickly run over which MK refused to feel too guilty about, even though the bump underneath the tires made him feel sick to his stomach anyway.
"What are those things? They look like... like people." Bai He whispered, her eyes glued to the window on her right where she must have seen a glance of one of the zombies through the wood. She sounded terrified and as much as MK wanted to reach back and reassure her with a hug or a smile he couldn't, needing to keep his eye on the road as he swerved through stopped traffic and turned over cars.
He really hoped they didn't come across a road blockage anywhere but if he did there would probably be another road to use to get around it so he wasn't too worried. He was just lucky that Tang had let him drive their shop's car a few times for practice so he knew how to drive no matter how illegal that have been since MK wasn't old enough or how they'd never told Pigsy because he surely would have skinned them both alive.
Bai He quickly got bored once the fear died off now that she couldn't really see the creatures and MK was glad because boredom was better than being afraid. Mostly because boredom was easily cured.
"Why don't we play some car games?" MK suggested, watching in the mirror as she looked up and nodded, leaning forwards in her seat.
"Yeah! What do you want to play?" They obviously couldn't play I Spy so MK rattled his brain trying to think of some other games.
