Both of them were in no rush to get back up after that, MK especially whose heart was still fluttering wildly in his chest, so they laid on the roof listening to zombies fall for a while with tired limbs.

"Well, that was definitely not how I expected our evening to go." Wukong chuckled eventually and MK laughed tiredly in response, twisting his head to look over at him.

"I know right? Me either. That was insane!" He breathed out and Wukong nodded, grinning ear to ear.

"We almost died!" He snickered and even though the situation and realization wasn't funny at all MK found himself laughing as well, the manic feeling that came with being flooded with adrenaline leaving him wired up.

"Say, what was so important about your backpack that we had to go back for it anyway?" Wukong asked and normally MK would've probably diverted the question, but he was feeling too loose-lipped at the moment and high on adrenaline that he didn't even think about his words as they spilled out.

"Just my sketchbook." He explained and Wukong sat up, raising an eyebrow.

"I risked my life for a sketchbook?" He asked incredulously and MK nodded.

"Well yeah but not just any sketchbook. All my drawings of my family are in there, and a photo of my birth parents. It's the only one I have." He didn't mention the drawing of Bai He though, that information was a bit too much for him to divulge so casually.

"Fair enough." And that was the end of that.

They lay in silence some more until MK finally sat up, stretching out his limbs and wincing at the ache in his back from lying on a roof so long, the cool night air leaving goosebumps on his arms that he finally started feeling now that his adrenaline was wearing off.

He looked over the side of the roof, wincing at the large number of zombies all around the house.

"Looks like we might be up here a while," MK commented a little sullenly, looking to his left and right to find the nearest building too far away to jump to and Wukong nodded, stretching out his arms.

"Yep. Looks like it. Guess we better settle in for the night." He said and then proceeded in lying down, using his bag as a pillow and closing his eyes while MK blinked and stared.

"...What are you doing?" He asked dumbly after a moment and Wukong cracked open an eye to look at him.

"What's it look like I'm doing? Sleeping." He told him, deadpan, and then closed his eyes again, looking like he really was trying to sleep up here on the cold, uncomfortable roof.

After another second MK realized he was probably right to get some sleep while they were stuck up here and decided to do the same, sitting down and using his bag as a pillow as well, curling up on the cold roof and feeling glad it wasn't raining.

He closed his eyes and tried to drift off but found himself wide awake, rolling over as stones dug into his side and then huffing when he was still uncomfortable and rolling over again. It didn't help, and MK wrapped his arms around his body and tugged his jacket tighter around him, tucking himself into as small a ball as he could in hopes that it would help him feel less cold.

It didn't, and after another few seconds, he let out a loud sigh, tucking his head into his chest and letting his breath warm his hands up.

He could still hear the zombies loud and clear, the sound and the cold and the hard roof digging into his back making it almost unbearable and he sniffed into his arms, squeezing his eyes shut and wishing he'd just fall asleep already.

This sucked.

"Uggghhh, fine! Get over here, kid." Wukong huffed loudly, and MK sat up, looking at the other's annoyed expression with a confused tilt of his head.
