Jaylen (Jay) Soo
POV:

Since Kavari and I's talk we've had no problems. Nothing good or bad has happened. We're just neutral.

It's Thanksgiving now. Some relatives from Junior's side were coming, people I've never met or seen a day in my life.

Kavari said the key to actually enjoy thanksgiving dinner was to starve all day and to not say anything smart to adults.

Honestly, I've never had a Thanksgiving dinner, yet a regular one. I've never sat at the table and talked to people while I ate, rather than at lunch. Even then it was always awkward having people watch you eat.

By now, the house was full of Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins.

While Kavari was making jokes with his family (since he got his devices taken away), I just wanted to sleep the day away.

I didn't know who these people were. I was introduced to them but I forgot half of their names. Plus, Kavari and I couldn't be anything while they were around.

No less than stepbrothers.

No more than friends.

If bothered me a bit.

More than just a bit.

It bothered me a lot.

"Y'all come and eat!" Senior shouts from downstairs.

I look in the mirror, button up shirt, blue jeans, with white converse. I wasn't fancy. I definitely wasn't rich. I didn't have as much as Kavari. He had the newest shoes, newest phone, newest clothes. He made me feel poor.

I let out a sigh fixing my hair, I grab my phone checking it before I head down.

Read 5:59 p.m.

I put my phone in my pocket heading downstairs.

I walk down to the table to see one chair left. Next to my mom, across from Junior.
I make eye contact with Vari. He looks good.

Gold necklace, white polo, dark blue jeans, and white threes. He smells like Dior.

Rich.

Vari sends me a soft smile that I gladly return.

Senior looks at me with a mug as I sit down next to my mom. As he sits next to his son, I realize how much they both act alike. They both wear an evident 'RBF'.

They always look upset.

Whether they're watching basketball together or mowing the lawn. You could tell it was a natural frown, nothing that was on purpose.

"Let's pray!" One of Kavari's Aunts say.

I notice everyone bowing their heads while holding hands with one another.

To me, this was weird.

I never believed in God. He never seemed real to me. How can I believe in someone I can't see? How can I believe in someone that's supposed to protect me when the exact opposite has happened?

My mom has always been big on honoring our ancestors. The Qingming Festival. A day where we offer food to our ancestors. We'd pray blah blah blah, the festival would last three days.

I'd rarely do anything with my mom, how could we offer food when we barely had any to eat ourselves?

"Jaylen, bow your head." My mom whispers.
I bow my head grabbing her hand and the person's next to me.

My mom always told me my culture was important. And it is.
The language barrier my mom and I first had while I was growing up was difficult. I could barely understand her. I know some Mandarin, not as much as I'd like.

"Amen." The people surrounding the table say. I mumble one out placing my hands on my lap.

As the food gets passed around the table, conversations start up quickly.

"So Junior, how's basketball?" One of his Uncle's asks. He puts way too much mashed potatoes on his plate.

Way too much.

"It's chill right now."
"His attitude is bad."

Kavari and Senior talk at the same time causing me to get second hand embarrassment.

How is it embarrassing? I don't know.
I just can't stand for parents to talk for their kids.

"What you do now?" His uncle asks averting his attention to them both. Before either of them can answer, they get interrupted.

"Forget that, you got a girlfriend yet?" One of his Aunt's ask.

Kavari glances at me licking his lips. He smiles bitting his bottom lip a bit.

"Something like that. We ain't made it official yet. Soon it will be."

I get instant butterflies.

I'm passed the mashed potatoes but it's hard to eat knowing Kavari wants me to be his.

Thanksgiving dinner goes better than I expected. They actually talked to me. Asked me about school and about any girlfriends.

I simply told them "Maybe soon." They didn't catch onto anything.

Who would?

"You wanna sleep in here tonight?" Kavari asks taking his shirt off.
"Yeah, can you turn the fan on, it's hot." I say as he hands me one of his t-shirts.

Kavari turns on his fan, locking the door. He walks over to me engulfing me into a hug. It surprises me. He gives me a quick kiss on the lips. I put my hands around his neck as his are around my waist.

"I'm gon make you mine soon, Jay." He says staring down into my eyes.

"Good, because I wanna be yours."

I'm a little late. MB YALL 😭. Also I keep thinking about how much power I have as a author.

I could literally kill off any character I want.
Anyways,
