rick killed him, in his own cold blood he stabbed him to death without a second thought. thats what you believe even though you knew it was the farthest thing from the truth. you shane and rick had been together long before the apocalypse, the three of you worked side by side as police officers back when the world was still livable.

now that you found out what he did to shane, you held a grudge against your former partner. you sat in the middle of the prison field sharpening your blade when the former officer approached you. you let out a displeased groan, not caring in the least what he had to say.

"come inside, we need the whole group there so we can discuss a plan," he ordered you around like you were his willing follower. you would have been long gone by now if it wasn't for the fact that you couldn't survive on your own for very long.

lowering the weapon to your side and facing the former sheriff. "tell me why you did it, can't you at least give me that?" you inquired, trying to move on from his death. shane was one of your best friends, and if anyone was fit to survive this world it would have been him no questions asked.

"(y/n) i told you already, he pulled a gun on me and threatened the group," he answered dryly. though you believed his story, that wasn't the whole truth. you knew rick, he wasn't the type of guy to just outright kill somebody. shane was his best friend there was no way rick would kill him that easily.

you glanced down towards the ground. "no that's the story you told the group, now i want you to tell me the real reason, rick." his light blue eyes effortlessly shimmered in the sun's rays. you made sure to look him dead in the eye when asking the question to know if he was lying or not.

"i didn't wanna kill 'em." he answered with a tint of sadness lacing over his words. he struggled to get those words out making him second guess telling you the truth behind what really happened in that field. "that baby in there, isn't mine," he paused for a minute, gathering his thoughts before saying. "its shane's, that's his kid."

you were left speechless at his confession that baby judith wasn't his. after his wife's death, he was now left to care for a child that wasn't even his own. being forced to look after your best friend's kid that was a result of an affair between his wife and best friend.

you couldn't even begin to imagine what was going through his mind. "rick, i'm so sorry." you say, getting the truth out of him was one thing but you felt a bit guilty for bringing up such a sensitive topic so soon after his late wives passing. it was a freshly opened wound that you had no business reopening.

"now, you got your explanation, the groups waiting," he said, turning his back to you and walking away. now after getting the truth like you wanted you had no reason to carry any hate toward your leader. you willingly followed him back inside the prison walls.
