you fell in love with your best friend. unsure of how it happened, you remained oblivious to the fact for so long. there was just something about her that made these strange feelings arise when she was near. she was smart, talented, and drop dead gorgeous. you loved her but were too scared to say anything.

the two of you sat on the porch of her house like you did every morning. getting up early just to watch the sunrise together was one of your favorite things. talking about the most random topics as the two of you had good laughs.

you wanted to tell her, tell her how you really felt, but then again what if she says no? you didn't want those good times to fade away, you really do enjoy hanging out with her. the two of you watched as the blinding rays of light appeared over the horizon.

the smell of smoke filled your nose. "since when did you smoke?" you asked, seeing her with a long white stick stuck in between her fingers. from her lips, she blew out a light grey puff of smoke that floated upwards towards the clouds.

"started a few days ago, it's really not a big deal," she answered like it wasn't a big deal. you hated when people smoked, the gross smell that came with it turned your stomach. just watching her inhale the toxic chemicals made a bad feeling arise in your gut.

"those things kill y'know," you said in a less than amused tone. shes your best friend and you hated seeing her like this. sad over the death of a guy who didn't give two shits about her. you assumed that's why she was starting this bad habit now.

she took another puff and let the smoke float up from her mouth. "so what, we're all gonna die sooner or later." those words stung. there was something different about her, she hasn't been acting like her usual self lately, and you suspected that guy had something to do with it.

shes been down ever since abraham's death. this feeling has stuck with her like a grey cloud following above her head. when she talked like that it hurt you, you didn't like seeing her so depressed that she couldn't care less if she died or not.

you stood from your chair and walked over to her spot. you grabbed the cigarette from her hand, putting it out in the ashtray before tossing it. "hey, what the hell was that for?" rosita asked with a string of anger lacing her words.

she was right though, nothing lasts forever. best to make the most of the time you have left. with that in mind, there was nothing to lose. you kissed her, pushing your lips up against her own. they were softer than you would've ever imagined.

you gave her something better to put between her lips, making sure she had a different addiction. rather than killing her from the inside, you would be there to help restore her broken heart. from now till the day the two of you lay dead on the battlefield alongside one another.

your eyes stayed shut as you backed away. you loved her and hated seeing how broken she had become. it took you a moment but soon after your eyes met hers. "you can't keep doing this to me, stop talking like you're gonna die." you say, unsure of how you could keep living if she one day pass on.

"i need you, i need you by my side, i can't go on without you rosita." you say somewhat frantically. the way she looked at you with that blank expression on her face wasn't helping, you wanted to know what she was thinking. you took a heavy breath before the words came out.

"your my best friend and i love y-" her hands cupped your cheeks as she pulled you close. making sure there wasn't space between the two of you as your lips touched. though you were surprised by her actions you didn't complain. loving the lingering feeling her lips left as she pulled away.

gazing deep into your eyes she mouthed the four words that made your heart flutter. i love you too. she wrapped her arms around your neck. you embraced her, wrapping your arms around her slender frame. finally, after all that time, the sun had peeked its head over the horizon.
