Everest's POV
We searched the whole city in pairs. I was paired up with Caspar, because we figured Calum would need someone like Tessa to protect him. And if she turned out to be evil, better him die than anyone else. (Okay, that sounds cruel, I know)
On the bright side, Caspar was talking to me. On the not so bright side, everything he said either sounded accusing or resentful. Also, we lost 4 people in the course of one day. Half of us.
"Have we searched that hill over there? The one next to all those pigs?" I asked.
"No, let's go." And we went.
On top of the hill, we didn't find anything. However, before we left, Tessa taught me that sometimes being in wolf form helped me see or sense things that I couldn't as a human. Like, perhaps, a portal, which it was pretty obvious they must've been using. Whoever they was.
Anyways, I turned into a wolf to see if there was anything. My heightened wolf senses didn't necessarily see anything, but I felt something that I had felt before. Like when Caspar healed me after he shot me (it seems like a long time ago).
I knew immediately that there was magic here, possibly a portal. But, seeing as neither me nor Caspar had been transported to a different dimension, it wasn't an active portal, which meant it was pretty much useless.
I Changed back into a human with no trouble. "There was definitely magic here, but the portal, if it was a portal, isn't active," I reported,"Do you think you can, I don't know, activate it?"
"Usually portals can only be activated and deactivated by the person who opened it. But I know of a few people with black magic that specialize in opening and closing portals, thanks to Lacy. They have access to every portal opened by anyone."
"Great. Do you know where the closest black magician is?... Shit, that came out wrong."
Caspar smiled slightly, "There's actually one in Seattle. Mr Cillgod I think." Fuck.
The blood drained from my face. There was no way he would help us, since I clawed his eyes out.
"Could we go to another one?" I asked Caspar.
"Well, he is the only one who is not so corrupted that he'll kill us on sight. So, we're going to see him." Double fuck.
"Then I hope he realllllly likes you because he probably won't want to help the girl who gouged out his eyes." His mouth dropped open. I guess no one told him.
I called Tessa to tell her what we had found and to meet us at the airport. Luckily she had suggested we "exchanged numbers" before we split up. I also saw I had four missed calls from my mom. However, I couldn't afford to call her, especially after calling Tessa.
So instead, when I got to the airport, I texted her this:
I'm coming home. Just went off to elope with a guy named Calum.
That's just how close we are. Actually, I texted her this:
I'm coming home. Don't worry, I can't call because the phone bill is already expensive as shit. Love you.
The message was sending (there was like no service here. #firstworldproblems) just as Tessa and Calum came running up to us.
Tessa pulled out a wad of $100 bills to pay for plane tickets, and I glared at her. "You're paying my phone bill this month," I said, and we all laughed uneasily. Time to go home.
