Everest's POV
Suddenly I was sitting in a room on a bed. Next to me sat Luna, her head in her hands. She was weeping. "Luna? Are you okay? What's wrong?" It didn't occur to me that she was supposed to be in a different dimension being tortured by Lacy. All that mattered was that my friend was hurt.
"Luna what's wrong?" Nothing.
The door opened. Lacy walked in, looking just as sad. "How are you?" She asked Luna.
"Exactly how anyone who just lost their brother would feel. Toby..."
I wanted to scream out that Toby was alive. He was pretending to be dead. I wanted to hold her and tell her that everything was okay. But suddenly I understood that this was a memory. I remebered that Lacy was evil and Luna was gone. Everything faded out.
Next I was standing close to Marina and Toby. They were talking quietly. I knew this was just a memory. It had to be right before they were kidnapped by Lacy.
Then suddenly they were in each other's arms. They weren't kissing, but they were holding on to each other. A moment when they could just be holding on to something.
The window opened quietly. "Hi guys," someone said with an evil smile. It was the girl who was talking to us in Czechoslovakia while Luna was getting kidnapped. I realized that she was working for Lacy. She distracted us from saving Luna. Then everything went black.
Now I saw Caspar. Unlike the other specific memories, this was like a montage. A montage of the moments he spent with Luna as a child. They were laughing, fighting, playing, crying.
I saw them grow up with each other. I saw how their relationship grew. I saw how Caspar's feelings for Luna became closer, yet she showed no sign of being any more than friends.
In that moment, I felt so bad for Caspar. I knew that feeling of unrequited love. Even though the memories were showing Luna, all I could think of was a name I knew too well. Boone.
As the images disappeared, the name Boone circulated around my head bringing out my own darkest and happiest memories.
Then I saw Toby. He was sitting next to the Commander. "I still don't think we shouldn't tell her. I mean, she's my sister," Toby was telling the Commander. He looked a few years younger.
"You can't tell her. You know there's a very little chance of you surviving this mission, and if she realizes how dangerous her job is, she might quit. Look, she's been through enough. Why make her happy just to break her heart again. She can't handle that much."
"My sister can handle more than you think. She already knows how dangerous being an assassin is."
"But she might blame us for sending you on a hopeless mission. She wouldn't believe me when I say that you volunteered." He nodded solemnly. It seemed to make sense to Toby. This must have been about him faking his death. Slowly it transitioned.
I was facing Tessa in a booth. She was smiling. Holding hands with some boy. He leaned in for a kiss. She smiled, then kissed him. Internally I was smiling also. I was happy for her for some reason.
But then a pain hit my head like someone was stabbing me. I had been feeling a dull ache there the whole time, but I had thought it was just because all the memories were depressing.
Now I knew this was something real. I started choking, but I couldn't cough. Tessa turned from her kiss, and her eyes opened wide. "Where did you come from?" She asked, horrified. The boy was frozen.
"How can you see me?" I asked, a short relief from choking. I was terrified, like she had caught me eavesdropping.
"Your life.... You're dying. You have to leave. Leave this memory. Quickly."
Then it was pitch black.
"You have to learn how to use your senses, other than sight. Learn how to use your amplifies sense of smell to your advantage," Tessa was saying.
At first I thought she was talking to me. Then I fell on the ground, shivering. I couldn't find the strength to get up, or even to breath.
I was dying, and I was still in a memory. "Where are you?" Someone yelled out in frustration. A candle was lit. I saw the outline of Tessa's beautiful, ageless face.
"You need to learn how to use your other senses. You won't be able to survive this world if you can't escape from an assassin. You've experienced it yourself, you know how relentless the assassins are."
I thought about what she said. I thought about how over 50% of the people I had met in the last 3 days were assassins.
But the pain was taking over. It was the worst thing I had ever felt. I imagine it was like what Ginny felt like in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Now all I needed was Harry Potter to come to my rescue. For some reason, I didn't think that was possible.
~The Girl Who Waited
A/NSorry that was so long but there was a lot I had to write. I hope you enjoyed it, and I know the memory part with Tessa doesn't make since, but I'll elaborate in the next chapter.
