Pulling into the driveway, my mother pulled her car behind mine. I couldn't believe I actually had invited her here. Demitri came out, dressed like he walked off the pages of a magazine. He definitely dressed himself up. The man was wearing jeans at home. That was rare.
"I brought Luca and you each a coffee and a sweet cream pastry."
He took the coffees and the bag of treats. I looked him up and down.
"You look both good and strange in jeans." I muttered.
My mother walked up the drive away. She stopped getting a look at Demitri and frowned softly.
"Mafia." she muttered.
"Yes, they both are." I said, softly.
"Your cousin's men?" She whispered.
"Yes, Demitri is, but Luca, my other partner, isn't."
I took the diaper bag in one hand and Corinna's car seat in the other. Luca met me at the door, taking the diaper bag.
"You should have waited for me to come help, Amore."
"I'm fine. Thank you, though."
Luca was also dressed up in jeans, but that wasn't as rare as seeing Demitri in jeans. Demitri took Corinna the minute I set her down.
"Where are the dogs?" I asked.
"Bedroom, they were sleeping, so I just closed the door."
"Ah, the normal place for them."
My mother took her coat and shoes off, but was just standing there.
"Please come in."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, Demitri and Luca won't bite. I have trained them pretty well." I teased.
I expected Luca to give me a few Italian words of disapproval, but rather it was Demitri who used his bad words.
"Hey, I heard that." I snorted.
"You were supposed to."
"You know my mother speaks Italian too, right? So calling me dirty words under your breath in Italian so she doesn't hear you don't work." I snickered.
"Oh, well." Demitri laughed.
"Can I get you anything?" Luca asked my mother, and she looked at me.
"I'd tell you what we have, but Luca bought the groceries." I said, heading to the kitchen to actually have a look. Luca met me in the kitchen, grabbing a can of iced tea, and he pulled me against him. "I'm shocked you invited her here. But we will welcome her with open arms, Amore."
"She's not fond of you both being Mafia, but I get it."
"Hmm, I'll be sure to leave that out of the conversation." He said, kissing my forehead before heading back to the living room. I spotted the oven on and opened the door to peek. The smell of oven baked pasta flooded out.
"Demitri! I knew you loved me." I yelled, far too excited for pasta, heading back to the living room. My mother was sitting on one couch, holding Corinna, and Dem and Luca were on the other one. It surprised me he gave her up to my mother.
"Theo mentioned you were both Mafia, though that is surprising to me, considering how far your father aimed to keep you from the Vincent Crime Family." My mother breathed. Luca looked at me, and he was probably about to speak to me in Italian, but he didn't. He must have remembered that she was also fluent in Italian, too.
"They are not the first mafia men I've been in a relationship with. I was married to one for a few years."
"I see. Was he one of Maddox's men?"
