Four days later, and two days with the baby at home with me, I wanted to cry. Maddox and Emerson were dropping by in intervals to help, but they couldn't help when they weren't here.
Maddox helped me tremendously, caring for her, and helped me buy everything I would need right off the bat. When we left the hospital, Marco left with his son in the carrier, looking confident as hell. I, not so much. I brought up my concerns with Marco having that child alone, but was promptly told that wasn't my concern. The more I thought about it, the more I realized Marco wouldn't be looking after the child alone. He didn't have the time. Someone else would be helping, too. Oddly enough, I figured I knew who that would be, too. Romeao.
Lying on the couch, I was exhausted. I tried to sleep when she did, but I kept checking to make sure she was still breathing and that was affecting my sleep. Aside from Alexi and Creed, no one else knew about her. My daughter. The words still scaring the hell out of me even when I thought about them.
Hunt and Hero slept right around the feet of the bassinet and they hadn't moved since I put her down to sleep. They were glued to her. When I brought her in, I was concerned they would freak out, but they did the exact opposite. They were calm and cool about her. They spent a few minutes watching her in the car seat and followed me when I moved her. You could find them, wherever she was, or at least that's how the last two days had gone.
Closing my eyes, I laid there and told myself she was fine and I was alright to sleep. I was so close to finally sleeping when someone knocked on the door, and I went rigid. I lept off the couch and to the door, fighting with the locks and yanking the thing open before whoever was on the other side woke up the baby.
Demitri stood outside the door, a look of concern on his face. He looked me up and down, and I didn't know what to say to him at all. With no words, I stepped aside so he could come in and he looked directly at the baby and was quick to turn back around.
"Theo, who's baby is that? Is this why you've been ignoring Luca's and I's calls for the last week, almost?"
"It's a long story—--"
She woke up and started screaming. I also wanted to just cry about all this, but I couldn't. Demitri moved around the condo and I couldn't pay attention to what he was doing and look after her. I just wasn't that good with baby yet.
"Let me see her." Demitri said, before he pulled her right out of my arms. Within seconds, he had her soother in her mouth, and she was quiet. This man just pissed me off.
"How—?"
"That's what I also want to know, Theo."
"Marco." I sighed, looking at him, unsure how to even start explaining this shit.
"Start from the beginning."
I nodded and started to speak, tears threatening to spill again.
"Marco called me to go see him at the hospital and so I did because he begged me to. When I got there, he told me I had a daughter, and I nearly lost my shit. I called Maddox and begged him to help me. Marco explained to me that he used the papers from when we were planning, or rather, when I was trying to convince Marco to have children with me. One of mine, one of his. He told me he realized his mistake when she came out and, well, look at her. She is clearly my daughter. He said he went back and looked at his copy of the papers and it confirmed that one of them was indeed mine." I said, breathlessly. Swallowing back tears.
"Hmm. I see."
Demitri looked at me and seemed to think about something, looking down at my daughter before he spoke.
"I don't know what you have for her, but I have my SUV and we can load up anything you need. The dogs can come too, of course. But you shouldn't have to do this alone, not when it wasn't something you had planned out."
