"raccoon city. a once thriving city that never slept aided by the powerhouse pharma company umbrella. overtaken by a pandemic level virus."
i heard the news anchor on the tv faintly while studying for my exam. i sat in my apartment looking over the notes for my computer science exam that was coming up. wait did she say pandemic level virus? i thought to myself looking up to the tv where the lady was going over details with evident concern in her voice. i frowned my brother was a researcher for umbrella. i reached for my phone before dialing his number.
hey this is adam sorry i can't reach the phone at the moment leave you number and name and i will try to give ya a call back.
his phone went straight to voicemail frowning i called again having the same result as before. shit shit shit. i emailed my professors telling them i had a serious family emergency and would be unable to attend class until further notice. quickly grabbing a small duffle from my closet i threw a few days worth of clothes into it with some other basic essentials. i threw on a pair of shoes grabbed my phone keys and pocket knife before heading to my car.
time skip
the drive was always a killer. raccoon was not in the easiest of locations to get to. the mountains surrounding the town made it a pain to get to the weather and time not helping. i sighed realizing i needed gas and stopping at a small gas station. i got out my car sighing as i notice the gas pumps were out. i walked inside frustrated at the poor maintenance of the place. when i got to the door i saw red on the ground. i froze
"is that blood" i whispered to myself eyes wide in shock. i pulled out my phone putting in 911 incase i needed to call and my pocket knife for defense. i carefully walked inside avoiding the pool of blood on the ground. the place looked like a tornado rushed through.
"hello? is anyone here? do you need help?" i shouted into the darkness before hearing a groaning noise. i pushed down any fear i had boiling up and slowly walked further into the store next thing i knew i had someone on top of me.
"hey! woah are you -" i cut myself off when i saw the persons face. milky dead eyes stared at me skin hanging loosely off their face blood dripping off of their lips. they opened their mouth bearing blood covered yellow teeth. is that a fucking zombie.
bang
i closed my eyes at the sound before i felt the weight get pushed off of me and a voice filled my ears
"are you okay. you didn't get bit did you?" the voice said cautiously. i opened my eyes to see blue ones staring at mine from above.
"i uh no. no i don't think so" i said sitting up and examining myself for injuries. the man did the same making sure i wasn't infected with whatever the other person had. he let out a sigh before holding his hand out.
"leon" he said grabbing my hand and pulling me to my feet a small smile of relief on his lips.
"astrid" i said back gently pulling my hand out of his "thank you for saving me"
"anytime i'm just glad there's someone here whos alive" he said pushing his hair back in frustration. i looked at him. he couldn't be much older than me. he was lean but had a fair bit of muscle to his frame. he had dirty blonde hair that laid asymmetric slightly covering one eye. he had blue eyes with a tint of grey to them.
"what's going on here? i heard there was a virus but the news didn't elaborate on it much" i asked hoping that leon had some answers. he looked at me before shrugging.
"i have no clue i was supposed to start my job at RPD last week but got a call to stay away." he said looking around for any ammo for his gun. i frowned. i really hope adam is okay.
"the police station should be a safe place if we can get to it" leon said looking back toward me. i looked up from my knife. i nodded at him before following him out the gas station.
i should've just turned the tv off that night. stayed in bed and assumed adam was busy with work and not answering his calls. instead i got pulled into a nightmare that i couldn't wake from. leon and i made it out the city along with a two others claire and sherry. the rest of the survivors if there was any... well they didn't make it. the city was bombed to smithereens to avoid having whatever the fuck was going on getting out. the government coved the whole operation up avoiding the press and diverting citizen attention to foreign affairs effectively sweeping it under the rug. soon raccoon city was a thing of the past no one mentioning it.
leon and i split apart after surviving. i accepted that the man who saved my life many times would be a person of my memories. i never knew where he went or what he did after the incident. as for me i went back to MIT to finish my studies. the summer of my junior year i received a message from a government agent asking me to participate in an internship opportunity for my field. i agreed to meet with them to see what it was about and get information. when we met they told me they knew i was present in raccoon city and i could finish my degree and work for them as a trained agent. the other option wasn't so pleasant needless to say i didn't have much of a choice working for them. i graduated with top honors before going into the grueling training process.
before long i was going on dangerous mission risking my life for a living. ironic. it definitely wasn't the life i had dreamed of. but hey it's better than having a strange 'house fire' or 'drug overdose' or life in prison for a crime i never committed. i was a good agent definitely one of the better ones. due to my proficient knowledge of tech and my quick reflexes i gained the codename python.
i sometimes think that maybe the blue eyed man who saved my life had a similar fate as me. or maybe he moved to canada and changed his name i will never know. to me he is just a guy who helped a scared college girl survive the apocalypse.
