(The image in the chapter is a representation of what the shelter buildings would look like, except there would be a skyway between the two of them that would connect them)
The next day, we woke up in the morning and talked a little about what we were going to do on the way. Then we left that room, we passed next to the hole through the ledge of a floor that didn't collapse and we went down the first stairs. We had to get out through a window on one of the stairs as the first floor and ground floor were buried and there was no way to get through there. Meg is very afraid of heights and it took her a while to get down, but we all made it down safely after Harry and I convinced her. She needs to get over it if she wants to survive in this world. I'll try to help her in the future.
The window we went out were going at that alley where we left the car. Once we were down, we went to the vehicle and Harry started it. Then we hit the road again and continued our journey to Colorado.
On the way, we passed some places with destroyed and pot holed streets and we wondered what happened there. The weirdest thing is that it wasn't just one region that was destroyed, but several parts along the way. It even looks like they threw grenades there, but the damage is too great for ordinary grenades and the explosion seems to have come from underground. I've seen some streets like these when I've been through New Mexico and Oklahoma, and I never understood why they were like that. It might not be a big deal, but I'm still curious. I hope I find out in the future.
We quenched our thirst with the water we got and talked for a while in the vehicle. Harry was driving with just one hand on the steering wheel while Meg had her two feet up on the dashboard and looked up at the sky. I was sitting sideways in the back seats with my legs stretched out as I watched the trees running through the woods and the rivers lit by sunlight. We ended up not needing to drink water from the rivers. We got so much water in that building that there will probably be some left over when we get to Colorado.
>> Some time later >>
After a long time on the road, we arrived at the long-awaited wall of Colorado. It's bigger than I thought and the gate is open. I hope the GRE and the Red Corporation have been through here already. I need a moment of peace and I don't feel like running away again.
As we passed the wall, I watched it and examined its condition. Its iron was slightly rusted and the forest was beginning to devour it. I'm glad the gate is open because I don't know if I could climb this thing with all that rust and those slippery leaves. There are some vines, but I'm not confident enough to climb one of them. Imagine if I'm almost reaching the top and that thing rips.
Hannah: - So. Is this the wall?
Meg: - Yes. Now this is really it.
Harry: - Ladies, we're officially in Colorado. Please excuse the bloodstained streets and gray, worn-out buildings. And don't feed the infected or they will evolve and kill the rest of the city.
Meg: - Poetic. It's sad, but true.
Hannah: - This city is different. Are all Colorado cities like this?
Meg: - Most are. Why? Not what you expected?
Hannah: - Not at all. It's pretty fine, to be honest. I thought it was worse. You should see Las Vegas. The buildings are collapsing frequently and most of the streets are full of potholes. It's almost like there's been an earthquake there.
Meg: - Las Vegas? Was that a pun on your last name? Was it a metaphor to say that you're destroyed inside?
Hannah: - Actually, no. But now that you say it, makes sense. I think I need a break. And a therapist.
