20) Running Into the Enemy

After I lay down for a while and rested, I got my stuff and left the electricity house. I thought about leaving the basketball court through the bent fence where Ben and Savannah had left, but when I looked at the gate, I realized that wouldn't be necessary. The zombies, who had been behind the gate and hitting the fences, had already left and everything was quiet now. I think the fact that I had rested a bit in the electricity house made them lose sight of me and forget that I was here. That's the advantage of dealing with zombies: if you disappear from their sight, you no longer exist.

Therefore, I opened the gate and left the safe zone normally. After I closed the gate, I looked around and saw nothing but a calm and empty street. Living in a zombie apocalypse is all or nothing: either you're fighting a thousand infected or you're having the calmest day of your life. I hope that small horde that was here went for a walk in another part of the city. I know that wanting peace usually attracts trouble, but I can't always live in distrust. It's relieving to be able to walk in peace with the wind blowing in my face and the sun bathing my skin. I need to organize my thoughts and make decisions without enemies trying to skin me every ten seconds. This helps me to concentrate in desperate moments later.

Unfortunately, this peace doesn't usually last long in a big and crowded city like this, but believe me. Outside the walls it's a thousand times worse. If I'm lucky, I won't run into any bandits today. I hope I don't run into any soldiers from the Red Corporation either. They shouldn't be hard to defeat, but I don't feel like dealing with any more of them today.

>> Some time later >>

After walking around for a while, I arrived at a part of the city that seemed to be very different from everything I saw back then. The streets were wider and so were the sidewalks. Even though the buildings aren't that close to each other, I have the feeling that you can still get from one to the other by jumping from the top. I won't try to do that now, but I'm sure I'll need to one day.

The street I was walking on was a viaduct and down there was another street that looked more like a highway. The highway was wide and divided into two two-way streets with a metal guard rail in the middle to separate them. There were also two streets on both corners that were made to connect the highway up here, but they were narrower. The buildings around the highway were a little more varied and the other viaducts up ahead ensured a greater sense of the city's immensity. From wherever I look, the horizon seems vast and very far away from here. It's weird to look at these empty streets and think that they were once the target of large crowds. Their design also reminds me a lot of the city of Los Angeles. I've been to California when I was still a guinea pig, but I don't know exactly which city the GRE laboratory is in.

It seems that Celestial is a mix of several existing cities in the United States in one place. I've seen streets that look like New York and highways like Los Angeles so far, but I wonder what other cities Celestial was inspired by. Are there cities from around the world here? Maybe some from Europe or Asia. It's all fascinating.

There were a few vehicles in the way, but nothing that would stop me from going forward. Therefore, I started to walk past them until I heard some noises coming from my left. It was the sound of someone being beaten and it seemed to be coming from the highway down there. I could also hear someone saying the words "Please! Stop! I don't know anything!" and that was enough to make me curious.

As soon as I approached the metal guard rail on the edge of the viaduct, I put my hands on it and leaned over to see what was happening down there. When I looked carefully, I saw a man lying on the ground with his legs bent and his arms around his head trying to protect himself from the beating he was taking. Around him were five men dressed in soldier uniforms and red vests. They were punching, kicking, and hitting the man with their guns while asking him questions and taking turns beating him. The classic interrogation where a group of cowardly men in greater numbers gather around someone and torture them in exchange for information. I've seen many cases like this with common bandits, but this is the first time I've seen the Red Corporation do this to someone in person.
