The morning sun cast a golden glow into the kitchen where the comforting sizzle of butter on the pan filled the air. Someone was carefully flipping aloo parathas, their edges crisping perfectly. Abhi stepped in groggily, just aiming for his usual cup of coffee, but the sight before him made him stop in his tracks.
He blinked, exaggeratedly shocked. "Did the sun just rise from the west today?"
From behind the stove, Jan turned slightly, brow arched. "What happened?"
Abhi grinned, leaning against the counter. "The great Jannat Zubair in the kitchen making breakfast! The world is truly changing."
"Shut up, Dada," she muttered, cheeks flushing, but her smile betrayed her.
Abhi walked closer, wrapping an affectionate arm around her shoulder as he teased, "For whom are you making these mouthwatering parathas, hmm?"
"Dada, don't tease me," Jan protested, nudging him. "But tell me honestly, taste and tell na how they turned out?"
Obliging, Abhi took a bite, and for a moment made an exaggerated face as if he were disgusted.
"Eww, Akshu these are so..."
Before he could finish, Jan's smile dropped. "Not good?"
Abhi burst into laughter. "No, they're amazing! Really!"
Her eyes lit up. "Really?"
"Absolutely."
She crossed her fingers behind her back, her voice soft with hope. "I hope he likes them too..."
Abhi's teasing eyes softened. "He will. Don't worry."
"Okay, Dada, go sit at the dining table. Everything's almost done."
Abhi glanced at the clock. "Actually, Akshu, I'm getting late. I have a meeting to attend and the place is quite far. I need to leave now if I want to be on time."
"But what about breakfast?" she asked, disappointment flickering in her voice.
"I'll eat later."
"Wait, I'll pack some parathas. You can eat them in the car."
He nodded. "Okay, do it fast."
Downstairs, Siddharth descended the stairs slowly, half-immersed in his phone. Without looking up, he took his usual seat at the dining table.
"Avi... bring me my breakfast!" he called out absently.
Moments later, a plate was placed in front of him. Without even glancing up, Sid began to roll one of the parathas. But as his eyes lifted, his hands froze. It wasn't Avi.
It was Jan.
"What happened? Eat," she said, her voice hesitant but hopeful.
Sid's jaw tightened. He slowly placed the rolled paratha back on the plate. Jan's smile faltered.
"Why did you put it down?" she asked softly.
Sid called out sharply, "Avi!"
Avi emerged from the kitchen, confused. "Why are you shouting? What happened?"
"Please give me breakfast. I'm getting late."
Jan blinked. "But this is breakfast. Today we have parathas."
"I don't want parathas," Sid replied, his tone clipped.
"Why not?"
Ignoring her, Sid turned to Avi. "Can you make me something else? Or should I just leave?"
