Two weeks has passed and it was hit or miss for Ze-Ro. But in his opinion it was mostly misses. His art hasn't improved, he still can't grasp forging, and his bum knee acts up everytime he goes to the yoga class.
Worse of all Mrs. Maheswaran won't stop bugging him about going to the doctor for an all around check up. In fact everyone kept talking to him as if he was actively trying to befriend everyone.
He still counts down the days before he can finally go home. Steven noticed this and wanted to think of something to help him feel more comfortable without undoing progress.
Recently he seemed to get more and more used to open spaces, which was good. He talked about it with the other crust gems back home.
Steven: Hm, Ze-Ro is definitely still very defensive.
Amethyst: At this point he should realize he won't get hurt, so what gives? He acts like any second we will all jump him.
Pearl: We've tried taking him to movies, we went in school field trips, we saw pandas at the zoo and he didn't even crack a smile.
Steven then had an idea.
Steven: You know what, I think I know exactly what to do.
Today was a day off for school and Ze-Ro just stayed in his room.
He heard a knock on the door. Steven let himself in and saw Ze-Ro just sitting there in an empty room.
Steven: Hey Ze-Ro.
Ze-Ro: I don't recall telling you to come in.
Steven: Sorry, I guess I'm excited.
Ze-Ro: For what? Another new pointless course?
Steven: No, I have assigned a new homework assignment for you and a few other classmates.
Ze-Ro: Oh goodie.
Steven could tell he was being sarcastic, but he has a good feeling about this one.
Steven dragged Ze-Ro outside where he was met with a van.
Greg was in the drivers seat.
Greg: Hop in gang.
Ze-Ro definitely didn't want to hop into the van. Lapis saw that he was nervous again.
She grabbed his arm and guided him.
Lapis: Come on, I had fun with this assignment when I got it.
Ze-Ro: Where are we going?
Steven: It'll be a surprise. You can trust me.
Ze-Ro was skeptical, but Lapis was with him and, oddly, he felt safe.
He, Lapis, and a few other select gems rode along in the van heading to an unknown destination.
Ze-Ro was definitely tense, and Greg could notice that he was making the other gems nervous.
Greg: How, about some music?
Steven: That sounds perfect.
Greg picked a random CD and played it. It was some generic rock music. Ze-Ro eased up a bit to pay attention to the lyrics, the sounds, the melody, it was oddly relaxing to him.
He kept his guard up, but it was clear he eased up a tiny bit.
Eventually the van stopped.
Greg: Alright gang we're here.
Everyone hopped out of the van. Ze-Ro saw what looked to be a massive fortress of sorts.
Ze-Ro: What purpose does this base serve?
