The cool breeze swept over Kandi's shoulders as she sat on the little brown bench waiting for her friend. She'd waited all day at school for this moment.

This was special to her and she hoped that she could find the courage to articulate that today. Kandi wasn't one to fall into anything easily, but she couldn't help but think about the comfort she felt around her.

As the sun began to set she felt her stomach drop praying that Tamika would come. She looked to the left in the direction of their houses to find no one walking in that direction and sighed.

She'd stood her up.

Well, maybe not officially. It wasn't a date and it also wasn't definite, but it was routine. As it had been for several months now since Kandi moved onto the other girls block.

They'd clicked instantly after meeting at the park one day and since then they'd found themselves on this very bench. They'd sing together and look up at the clouds dreaming of a life that was only possible in fairytales.

Kandi took one more look in that direction and then back up at the street lights seeing them start to become more vibrant. She sighed, standing up grabbing her notebook before walking back toward her house.

She'd hoped she would be able to share what she's been dying to say for weeks. In hopes that Tamika would understand that she liked her, more than a friend.

As she walked home she could feel tears brimming in her eyes and she allowed herself to cry. She felt played and even though it probably wasn't the most rational feeling, it was hers.

She was fifteen, what could you expect?

Her emotions were already a wreck this just added to the pile up. She walked into the house just as the street lights shined brightly and the sky faded into darkness.

"Kandi, you need to start walking back to the house earlier so you are here before the street lights come on. I know you love hanging with Tamika, but their will be no more of that if you can not be responsible.." Her mother said, without turning around to know she made it into the kitchen.

"Okay, mama" She sniffled, causing her mother to turn to her in an instant. "Oh, my baby! What's wrong? Who did it?"

"I don't want to t-talk about" She shook her head as she began to cry harder. Her mother engulfed her in her arms and rubbed her shoulder.

"That's okay. Look I made your favorite! That always cheers you up, right?" Kandi nodded softly against her mothers chest and her mother kissed her forehead before rushing to grab her tissues.

They finished eating dinner and she got ready for bed with the same sadness on the inside. She laid in bed wondering how she'd feel when she saw Tamika tomorrow.

Across the street, Tamika was feeling the same sadness but for a different reason. She found herself crying against her bed as her mother took her door off of the hinges in her room.

Her mother found Tamika's personal journal and indulged in all three hundred and five pages that were dedicated to Kandi. She was in love with the girl even if she wasn't quite sure what that meant she knew how she felt.
