- 2000s 'Hey Kandi...' era
___
Kandi"And that's a wrap!" The director yelled as everyone started clapping. Everyone started to shower me with hugs as I walked off the set of my music video.
I just finished filming the video for my song 'Don't think I'm not' and I was very excited. With everything going on in my life it felt good to have something positive going on.
"Ahh! I'm so proud of you! We are going out tonight and I am not taking no for an answer.." Tiny said as we walked into my dressing room.
I immediately shook my head before responding "You know I can't tonight. I have to go meet Todd so we can finish planning this wedding and then after that he's probably going to want to spend time together.." I groaned.
You would I would I be happy about getting married but I wasn't at all.
"Ugh! I wish you would realize you don't have to get married to him, Kandi.."
"Look, I don't want to talk about this again. I won't hang out with him tonight and we can do our thing. How's that sound?" I asked.
"I'll take it, I guess, but I really want you to think about this. Don't make this big commitment for anybody other than you because at the end of the day you are the one who will be married not your mom.." Tiny said.
"—But I'll leave it alone. Come to my house around eight and dress cute I have a surprise for you.." She added and I eyed her suspiciously.
What's surprise could she possibly have for me?
"Whatever, ma'am. I'll be there."
••
I made it to Tiny's house a little after eight and knocked on the door. She opened the door in her pajamas making me frown.
"Girl, how are you not ready and you told me to be here at eight.." I groaned.
"Don't worry about me! C'mon your surprise is already here.." She pulled me further into the house and shut the door behind me.
"Girl, what is this surprise?" I asked as she continued to pull me down the hall towards her guest bedroom.
"You'll see.." She smiled.
She stopped at the door with her hand placed firmly on the knob and turned to me. "Alright, I want you to just keep an open mind and not be mad at me after this, okay?"
Now I was worried. What the hell could be behind that door?
She open the door and pushed me inside before walking away. I was still facing the door when I felt a familiar presence behind me.
I want sure how I recognized it but I did. It was the presence of comfort, safety, and love that filled the air in the enclosed space. I swallowed the lump in my throat and braced myself before turning around.
