"What a day!" The Sixth Hokage yawned out before falling into his rotating armchair.
He kicked his brown wig above a pile of paperwork and peeled off the purple markings off his face. Going undercover was sweaty, next time he really is going to send an aid in his place.
"I'm trusting that you managed to see how fit all the promising graduates are this year," Shikamaru said. "You can't just fail a whole class before they begin their final year, " he mocked.
Kakashi Hatake rolled his eyes at him. "I wish I could but these kids have potential. They might be better than your generation," he remarked in high praise.
"But... there are a few kinks that need to be worked out, some more than others," he said as he slid two photographs across the table to his advisor.
"Boruto Uzumaki and Sarada Uchiha?" he asked. "What problems do these two possibly have?"
"One tries two hard and the other doesn't try at all."
Shikamaru hummed in agreement as he recalled how his son would talk about these two.
"But the main issue seems to be with each other."
"Well that's nothing new," Shikamaru chuckled. "Their fathers were like that too. Unlikely rivals with a little bloodshed here and there."
Kakashi sighed. "History mustn't repeat itself. We can't risk having another Uchiha on the loose and an arrogant Uzumaki," he warned, making the smile on the other man's face disappear.
"If they don't clean up their act before they graduate, it's certain to say that I'm going to have to do more than just teach them a lesson during their finals. I'm going to fail them."
The Sixth Hokage turned his back on the other male and stared out the window, the view of the whole Leaf Village in his eyes. He couldn't stop thinking about the empty look in that young boy's eyes.
"What kind of shinobi do you think that boy would become Shikamaru?"
The head of the Nara clan scratched the back of his head.
"Well, if I put some thought into it he's a complicated kid. Unlike Naruto, he's the type to lose himself to mischief for no reason, very different from how his father turned out. It could be a phase but if unchecked he might become a problem for the village."
The silver haired man hummed in agreement.
"And as for the girl?"
Shikamaru groaned. "The best case scenario is that she turns out like her mother above anything else. Her father's a wanted man. No child would want a rogue for a father and no parent would want their child to walk down the same path of pain."
"Except that this child is an Uchiha," Kakashi sighed.
He feared that all the pain and shame she will one day encounter will overshadow all the happy memories she's managed to keep so far. He knows what it's like to befriend a person with dreams of becoming Hokage. It's the loneliness that poses the real danger.
Kakashi sat down on his rotating chair and waved the advisor off.
"Only time will tell I suppose," Nara said as he stuffed his hand into his pocket as he left the room.
Only time would tell.
