It's been a week since that night, the night your whole world halted. You remember every detail so vividly. Rae was especially empathetic, holding you close as tears built up in your eyes.
You couldn't breathe, you could barely stand. You felt lightheaded and it was as if the room had begun spinning. But Rae did her best to make everything feel just a little bit better...
But she couldn't do everything for you, and your mom wasn't gonna get better over night. So you had an impossible choice to make, and impossible task to take on...
"I know, it's gonna be difficult, Rae. But I can't possibly stay here in LA while my moms back at home with nobody to take care of her."
"I know, baby. I know. I get it, and you should go help her. I'm just worried how it might affect.... How it might affect us..."
"Yeah... I've been thinking about that too..."
She sighs, "I'm sure it's gonna be fine. You have somewhere to be, ya know. And I can come visit whenever..."
And so, the decision was made for you to head home to help your mom recover. It doesn't take too long for you to move your things, mostly because you'd mostly just started anew. Everything truly sentimental was all back home, collecting dust in your old room.
Reluctantly, you bud Rae farewell, at least for now. You make the org aware of your situation and of course, you're met with empathy. Matt gives you all the time off you need, and even offers company resources to you and your family.
It's tough saying goodbye to this life, if even just for now. You'd grown accustomed to your new friends, to your loose schedule. You aren't sure whether to make a public statement about it, so instead, you announce that you'll be taking a well needed "mental health break."
You planned on being transparent at some point, but as of now, it just wasn't the time.
And so, with the U-Haul packed up and everything situated, it was time to go. You give Mika (Rae's dog) one last pet and a hug before turning to face Rae.
"I guess that's it... Cya later alligator..." you say, trying to break the ice.
"In awhile, Crocodile..." she laughs.
A silence takes over the two of you, awkwardness fills the air.
"I love you Rae..."
"I love you too Y/n..."
You nod, not wanting to leave.
"I'll let you get going. Just drive safe, okay?"
"I will. Let me know when you're planning on visiting, okay..."
"Okay... Goodbye, Y/n..."
"Goodbye Rae..."
2 months later...
Life has been a blur, every day sorta just merging together.
To start, your mom started chemo. She's feeling about how you'd expect, but her spirits remain high. You have to make sure she eats 3 meals a day, which is difficult with her declining appetite. She's fully capable of walking around and socializing, she just isn't always in the best of moods.
You spend your days helping her out and watching TV. Besides that, you're mainly doing work around the house or working in your dads old wood shop.
The time you spent in there brought you back, back to the days before dad passed. Photos hung on the wall of you, him and mom. Some of his old crafts were still laid out on the counter.
