Flashes. That was all that Steve saw now. It had been nearly 70 years since he crashed into the ice, his body going into some sort of hibernation as the world passed him by.

70 years since the war ended. Since Bucky died. Since he saw Peggy.

Since he saw Daphne.

When he woke up he was told that she had been presumed dead. Long gone. That no one had seen her since he died. No one except Howard but he was gone too.

Steve was introduced to Nick Fury, the head of S.H.I.E.L.D., an organization that Howard and Peggy helped start. He had been allowed to stay in one of their safe houses for a few weeks while he got adjusted to his new life.

How he was supposed to do that, he had no idea. He woke up in a new century. Everyone he loved was gone.

Everything was different. After moving out of the safe house he got an apartment in New York, paid for by S.H.I.E.L.D. while he was still getting adjusted.

He was starting to wish he had just stayed asleep.

Sending punch after punch into the bag in front of him, he did his best to let out his frustrations. He had been doing this for the past year, but nothing seemed to help.

"Trouble sleeping?"

Turning around to see Fury walk in, he scoffed. "I've slept for 70 years, sir. I think I've had my fill" he said.

"Then you should be out, celebrating, seeing the world," Fury told him.

Steve shook his head, unwrapping the gauze that protected his knuckles. Celebrating? Celebrating what exactly?

"When I went under, the world was at war. I wake up, they say we won. They didn't say what we lost" Steve said.

"We've made some mistakes along the way. Some, very recently" Fury said and Steve looked down, finally noticing the files he was holding.

"Are you here with a mission, sir?" he asked.

"I am. Two actually" Fury told him.

"Two? You really are trying to get me back in the world, huh?" Steve asked.

"Trying to save it," Fury said, handing him one of the files.

Steve took it and frowned when he saw a picture of the tesseract. The thing that had turned his life upside down so many years ago.

"Hydra's secret weapon" he mumbled.

"Howard Stark fished that out of the ocean when he was looking for you. He thought what we think. The tesseract could be the key to unlimited sustainable energy. That's something the world sorely needs" Fury said.

"Who took it from you?" Steve asked.

"He's called Loki. He's not from around here. There's a lot we'll have to bring you up to speed on if you're in. The world has gotten even stranger than you already know" Fury said.
